If you have an online store, blog, or website, adding your products or blog posts to Pinterest is essential for driving more traffic back to your site. In this post, we’re going to highlight how to make money on Pinterest, best practices on Pinterest, and some other topics to help you achieve success on the platform.

How to Make Money on Pinterest

1. Link to your products on Pinterest

The easiest way to make money on Pinterest is to add links to your product pages on pins. You can use all your product photos as pins for your product. Optimize the title and description for keywords. Then, add a link to the product page for the corresponding photo. If you do this for all your products, you’ll start attracting traffic to them over time. Keep in mind that Pinterest is not the kind of platform where pins typically go viral immediately. Some pins gain traction months or even years after they are created. As you add new products to your store, regularly add new pins to keep your Pinterest account active.

2. Create multiple pins per product page link

For each page of your site, aim to have 2-3 pins per link. You want different photos or created pins for each one to prevent spam. You don’t need to upload all the pins for the same link at once. Spacing them out can give them another boost later on. However, having only one pin per post doesn’t guarantee success. For some blog posts I’ve written, I’ve added 10 pins with completely different images and watched some of them go viral. It depends on the post you create. Some pins make sense to have many designs. While you don’t want to risk getting your account taken down, you can add more than one pin per link on your profile.

3. Run Pinterest ads

Pinterest ads aren’t as profitable as those on most ad platforms, like Facebook or Instagram. However, there is a small hack that Pinterest ads are good for: amplifying search listings. A few years ago, I noticed that whenever one of my Pinterest pins went viral, it would rank on page one of Google for that keyword. If your page is properly optimized for search, you have a high domain authority, and want to increase your ranking on Google, you can run a Pinterest ad to amplify your search listing. In SEO, we call this social signals. Basically, after running a Pinterest ad, your pin gains more repins, which increases its popularity. Then, once the ad is done, the pin often continues
sending traffic for a while, allowing you to maintain your position since it’s now ranked higher on Pinterest, too.

4. Sell someone else’s products on Pinterest

You can also make money on Pinterest by selling someone else’s products on Pinterest. You can do this by joining an affiliate program. One example of an affiliate program you can join is Payhip Partner Program. Payhip has an affiliate program where you can promote Payhip on Pinterest by adding your custom affiliate link and earning a 50% recurring commission on what Payhip makes from the sale. Overall, you can write blog posts and post them on Pinterest and earn sales. Affiliate marketing is allowed on Pinterest, with active pinners regularly posting links to other products.

5. Drive traffic to your blog

You can make money on Pinterest by driving traffic to your blog. If your blog is optimized with products, affiliate links, ad networks, or any other income stream, you can add links to your blog posts on Pinterest and still earn money. To boost your blog sales, you need to have a ton of traffic. Sending traffic from Pinterest is a surefire way to get your sales rolling in. If you’ve been building your blog for some time, you can add multiple pins per blog post, each with a different style and aesthetic. Try matching the looks of some of the currently ranking blog posts. Some pins’ aesthetics get grouped together visually, making it easier for your pins to rank for that keyword.

6. Become a virtual assistant for Pinterest accounts

Those wanting to make money on Pinterest can also do so by becoming a virtual assistant for Pinterest accounts. If you’re constantly active on Pinterest, you can pair up with brands by actively posting on Pinterest on their behalf. You’ll be able to get paid for your work while building a following on a Pinterest account. While you won’t own the Pinterest accounts, you’ll be able to earn a living by managing Pinterest accounts for brands full-time.

7. Partner with brands

You can also earn money on Pinterest by partnering with brands. You can do sponsored posts on Pinterest, where you pin another brand’s products on your own Pinterest account for a sponsored post fee. If you own a popular blog or website, you can add sponsored pins as a service you offer to brands to market their business, blog, or products.

How to Start Making Money on Pinterest

1. Choose a profitable niche

Before you launch your Pinterest account, choose a profitable niche. While you can add boards in any product category, having a focused niche will help you boost your overall followers since they’ll want to see more of the same type of content you offer. For example, if you sell cookbooks, having multiple boards devoted to different cuisines, recipes, diets, and more will allow you to build an extensive collection while maintaining a niche focus on food. That way, people who see your bio link will be more likely to purchase your products since they’re looking for exactly that kind of content.

2. Create a Pinterest business account

A Pinterest business account allows you to access analytics, advertising, ecommerce features, rich pins, advanced targeting, and so much more. There are more benefits to having a Pinterest business account than not. Plus, there are no fees for signing up. To create a Pinterest business account, you should go to Pinterest, then click sign up, then click Create a free business account, enter your details, and you’re good to go.

3. Optimize Your Profile

When optimizing your profile, ensure your business logo, name, and website link are included. You also want to create various boards that match the niche’s main keywords. For example, “Gym aesthetics,” “Keto diet,” “Personal finance,” and so on. Whatever board topics make sense to you. Pinterest also gives board name recommendations in case you’re stuck with modern Pinterest search keywords rather than just your traditional SEO keywords. A combination of the two could work favorably for you, though.

4. Perform Keyword Research

You can perform keyword research by typing in standard keywords for your niche and digging around. You can see what people title their pins and how their descriptions are labeled to help inspire your own copy. Some people go for the strict SEO route, while others use keywords that their audience usually uses to describe their niche. Taking time to research keywords will also allow you to see the kind of pins that appear at the top for your keywords, so you can understand Pinterest’s main aesthetic, too.

5. Design Clickable Pins

Some pins are more clickable than others. On Pinterest, you want to match the look of the pins for that keyword. One of my most viral pins was a screenshot from my notes app of different Instagram captions for an article I wrote. There was no call to action on the pin. It was just a list of caption ideas with some emoji graphics. However, the article link was to an article on that exact keyword, so the graphic matched the article’s intent, resulting in high click-throughs. For some pins, just adding a blog post title and a well-designed graphic can lead to high click-through rates. Your product photos, if they’re compelling, can also drive impulse purchases from people who want to buy that exact item. Overall, there are multiple ways to achieve a high click-through rate, so you can try different styles to see what works best for your niche.

6. Create High-Quality Content

To make money on Pinterest, you need to create high-quality content to avoid being penalized for spam. The high-quality content can be a blog post, landing page, or product page. If you’re promoting a product, if the product isn’t yours but through an affiliate link, make sure you disclose that it’s an ad. If the product is yours, you’ll want to add multiple pins of different product angles. Some Pinterest users say you’ll get dinged if you add too many pins to the same link in a short time frame. I’ve actually done this before and didn’t get marked as spam, and multiple pins of the same batch actually went viral. Use caution to not add too many pins for the same link at the same time, but you can do a few. If you’re concerned, space it out.

7. Publish Consistently

If you want to make money on Pinterest, you need to post consistently. If you post a bunch of pins and then don’t post again for several months, you likely won’t see the traction you would’ve gotten if you had kept posting on a weekly or biweekly basis. Stick to the schedule that works for you. If you’ve only got time on Saturday nights when you’re lounging on the couch, then stick to that as a routine. Setting a notification to post on Pinterest will help keep things going. Remember, you can schedule pins directly in Pinterest, so you don’t have to be online for the exact time you want the pin up.

8. Analyze Your Results

If you have a Pinterest business account, you’ll have access to Pinterest analytics. Your analytics in Pinterest can be set for a specific range or a custom range of your choosing. You can get data on impressions, engagements, outbound clicks, saves, audience size, and more. You’ll be able to see the exact numbers for all your pins, with your top pins appearing first per category.

Pinterest Best Practices

1. Use Pinterest as a search amplifier

A little secret most creators don’t notice is that if a pin goes viral on Pinterest, your article’s ranking in search engines also rises. You can actually get an article on page one of Google because of a viral Pinterest post, provided that your article is optimized for search. You can actually use Pinterest as a search amplifier by running Pinterest ads on a page you’ve optimized well for search. What happens is that the ad drives traffic to your pin and repins. After the ad stops running, the repins, and your new elevated position keep working their magic to give you a consistent stream of traffic. I typically set a budget of about $50 for about 3-4 days on pins. Remember, your pin name should be the article’s main keyword to attract a relevant audience to your landing page. If you don’t have a budget to do this, just keep adding pins, and with time, pins will start taking off.

2. Create multiple pins for each link

If you create only one pin per link, you have only one shot to make it go viral. However, if you post multiple pins with different aesthetics, you could gain more visibility. For product photos, you might have lifestyle photos, product photos, or short videos of products; you could pin all of those with a link back to your product page to help you gain as much visibility as possible. If you’re pinning a blog post, you could do one with the name and title of the blog post to get people to read it, another one of an infographic based on the details of the blog post, and more. You shouldn’t add multiple images of the same exact pin to Pinterest, as you’ll likely get flagged for spam. It can be a similar aesthetic, but not the exact same graphics.

3. Test different pin styles

Success in Pinterest marketing boils down to experimentation and mirroring. The best way to experiment is to look at the top pins of any keyword and see the styles of pins people create. Look at specific keywords, as well as broader ones, to determine which aesthetic that keyword tends to rank with. Mirroring works really well on Pinterest. If you see everyone is creating a pin in a specific color palette, template, or design style, emulating that look for your own pin will make it more likely that you’ll rank well and near the top.

4. Write SEO-optimized titles and descriptions

Pinterest is a search-based social media platform. Optimizing your titles, descriptions, and alt tags for specific keywords will help you rank higher for those keywords. Knowing SEO and having experience in it will make you a better pinner. When labeling your title, just adding your main keyword can be enough. If you have a blog post title, you don’t need to add the entire title. If your product names are titled non-SEO names, like Sophia necklace, you should use the keywords to describe what type of necklace it is, like gold pendant necklace, instead on Pinterest with a link to your Sophia necklace on your website. Adding the keyword in alt tags also helps explain exactly what the graphic is. Your description should be detailed and may include additional keywords in a more natural form. Avoid keyword stuffing in descriptions; keep them readable.

5. Schedule your pins

The odds that you will always be on Pinterest at the best times to post on Pinterest are rare. Life happens, work gets busy, and time slips through the cracks. Fortunately, you don’t need an external scheduling tool to schedule pins on Pinterest, as you can do it directly on their website. You can find research online on the best times to post. On weekends, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. are the best times to post. On weekdays, particularly Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. are the best times. This data changes over time, so don’t forget to check different sources over the years.

Best Tools for Pinterest

1. However, you can get sales from your pins because your pins can still appear in search results for their keywords on Pinterest.

Does Pinterest pay creators directly?

No, Pinterest doesn’t pay creators directly.
