Returning to the Word: How to Begin Again with Bible Study and Breathe Life into Your Walk with God
Coach Joy
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” — Psalm 119:130 (KJV)
You’re not here by accident. Something in your spirit is reaching back toward the Word. Maybe it’s been a while. Maybe shame tried to chain you up. But Sis, the Lord isn’t waiting to rebuke you. The Lord is wanting to reunite with you.
If you've found yourself longing to reconnect with God but unsure where to start, this post will walk you through how to begin (or restart) your bible study journey with simplicity, grace, and the fire of the Holy Ghost.
1. Bible Study Is Not About Perfection. It is time to Get in the Lord's Presence.
Let’s break the lie: You don’t have to feel “ready” to return to the Word. You just have to be willing. The enemy thrives in delay and discouragement, whispering, "You're too far gone. You won’t understand it. You missed too many days."
But the Lord says,
“Come now, and let us reason together…” (Isaiah 1:18 KJV)
Bible study isn't a performance and you must take the right heart posture. A surrendered heart that says, "God, I’m here. Teach me." And He will.
2. Start Small, But Start Holy Spirit-Led
Don't pressure yourself to read entire books in one sitting. Begin with a Psalm. The Proverbs. The Prophets. A short parable from Jesus. Let the Holy Spirit guide your focus.
Ask yourself:
“What am I walking through emotionally or spiritually right now?”
“What do I need God to speak into today?”
Then open the Word expecting an answer. That’s the difference between reading and receiving. That’s biblical intimacy.
Try this as a simple starting point:
Day 1: Psalm 27 — for fear and confusion
Day 2: John 15 — for abiding and identity
Day 3: Romans 8 — for condemnation and empowerment
Let the Word wash you consistently and renew your mind
3. Use Tools that Fit Your Season
Don’t be ashamed to use tools that fit your current flow. A good bible study doesn’t have to mean hours of deep-diving into Greek. Use what supports your healing and growth.
Recommended tools:
A KJV Study Bible or parallel Bible
A guided journal to help process what you read emotionally and spiritually
A simple app like Blue Letter Bible for deeper context when you’re ready
Don’t underestimate the anointing of simplicity.
4. Ask Holy Spirit-Led Questions
As you read, pause and ask:
“Holy Spirit, what are You highlighting?”
“What is this showing me about who God is?”
“How does this correct or comfort my soul?”
Let the Word reveal. Your bible study is meant to heal and educate.
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” — Psalm 119:11 (KJV)
This is where deliverance starts, heart-level revelation.
5. Build a Consistent Bible Study System, Not a Religious Routine
Systems are about creating space. A strong bible study system supports your growth, even on the hard days. The goal is communion, not compliance.
Try anchoring your day with:
Morning: A verse and 3-minute prayer
Midday: A journal reflection or worship moment
Night: Re-reading and thanking God for what He showed you
As you build consistency, the hunger will return.
6. Break Agreement with Shame and Start Fresh
Maybe you used to be “on fire.” Maybe you led studies, preached, journaled daily. But now you feel disconnected, distracted, and spiritually dry.
Sis, hear me: Your past mistakes doesn’t disqualify your present return. The Lord is not holding a grudge. He is holding space.
“For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord…” — Jeremiah 30:17 (KJV)
He’s not waiting for perfection. He’s inviting you back into restoration through the Word. Right now.
7. Let the Word Become a Mirror and a Weapon
As you study, the Word will start to expose both pain and potential. It will convict, comfort, and clarify. Let it.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…” — Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
Use it as:
A mirror: to reflect and reveal your heart
A map: to direct your next steps
A weapon: to war against the lies of the enemy
Declare it, out loud and in faith.
Final Encouragement: He Delights in Your Return
If you feel nervous about getting back into bible study, let this be your confirmation: God delights in your return. This isn’t about checking a spiritual box. The flame may have dimmed, but it’s not out.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” — James 4:8 (KJV)
So draw near. One verse, one page, one prayer at a time.
