Growing up, most of us have heard our parents emphasize the importance of eating a “balanced diet”. Whether we liked it or not, veggies made their way onto our plates, and phrases like “you need it to grow” echoed at the dinner plate.
But how valid were these claims? Today I'll walk with you as we explore what a balanced diet is, why it matters, why vegetables are so important and whether these claims are scientifically backed up.
What is a balanced diet?
According to Healthline and Cleveland Clinic, a balanced diet involves a range of different nutrients needed for your body to function effectively.
These nutrient includes Macronutrients and Micronutrients.
- Macronutrients are needed in large amounts and include;
- Proteins 🍳
Are important building blocks of the body and help in the formation of muscles, bones, skin and other tissues.
Proteins can be acquired from both animals and plants.
- Plant-Based Examples include: Beans & Legumes, Nuts & Seeds, Soy Products, Grains.
- Animal- Based Examples include: Meats, Poultry, Fish & SeaFoods, Eggs, Dairy.
- Carbohydrates 🍠.
Are important sources of energy to the body.
They compromise of simple & complex carbs.
- Simple Carbs are easier to digest and can lead to rapid increase in sugar levels examples include; sugar, honey, fruit juices.
- Complex Carbs are slower to digest which leads to a sustained boost of energy examples include; legumes e.g beans, whole grains, and starchy vegetables.
- Fats 🥑
Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated fats are especially important in brain and heart health, hormone regulation, Vitamins & Nutrient Absorption, Inflammation, Cell Function, Energy Source, Organ Protection.
Examples include: Avocados, Nuts, Olive Oil
- Micronutrient are needed in smaller amounts and include;
- Fruits 🍉.
Micronutrients such as potassium, fiber, vitamin C, A & E found in fruits support brain development and the immune system. Examples include; berries, bananas, citrus, apples.
- Vegetables 🥗.
Examples include; spinach, bell peppers, broccoli, sweet potatoes.
So…. Does it Really Matter?
Yes. Balanced diets help:
- Support your immune system.
- Reduce the risk of chronic diseases
- Improve mood and brain clarity.
- Promote healthy skin, nails, digestion, and hormone.
