Feeling Overwhelmed by the Bible? Here’s Why It Happens

Hey there, Beloved! —

Let's talk about 5 reasons you don't read your Bible.

If you’ve ever opened your Bible and felt overwhelmed, confused, or even a little ashamed, please take a breath: you are not alone. I’ve been there too. Today, I want to share five honest reasons why the Bible might feel intimidating—and how we can push through them together.

1. You're Not a Strong Reader—and That’s Okay

Let’s clear this up right away: not being a strong reader doesn't disqualify you from experiencing God’s WORD. There are so many helpful tools out there. I use Google all the time to look up how to pronounce a word. You can even listen to Scripture using audio Bibles. Whether you read it or listen to it, the WORD can still take root in your heart.

2. You Just Don’t Like Reading

Some people just don’t enjoy reading—and that’s okay, too. I happen to love reading, but I know not everyone does. Thankfully, technology makes it easy to engage with the Bible in other ways. Bible apps like YouVersion offer audio versions and visual devotionals. The goal isn’t to become a bookworm—it’s to encounter God.

3. The Language Is Confusing

If “thou,” “thee,” and “doth” trip you up—you're not alone! I grew up reading the King James Version, but I also lean on the New Living Translation (NLT) because it speaks in today’s language. The Passion Translation (TPT), Easy-to-Read Version (EASY), and English Standard Version (ESV) are also great options. Use what helps you understand, and don’t be afraid to parallel-read different versions to deepen your grasp.

4. You Don’t Have a Community

Reading the Bible in isolation can feel like wandering without a map. One of the biggest game changers is community—having people to ask questions, share insights, and grow with. If you don’t have a church home yet, keep following along here. I’ll be sharing ways to help you get connected and even join groups like Bible Fusion, where we study together and support one another.

5. It Just Feels Like... a Lot

Let’s be real—the Bible book itself is thick! It can be daunting to even know where to start. Here's the truth: I haven’t read the Bible cover to cover in one straight shot either. I’ve read a lot of it, just not all in order. And that’s totally fine! Don’t get stuck on “finishing” it. Focus on living it—reading to know God’s heart, not to check a box.

Let’s Grow Together

The Bible is not just a book—it’s God’s voice, His heart, His plan for you. You don’t have to tackle it alone or perfectly. You just have to show up.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And we’re going to find that way together.

Reach out if you’re hungry to grow. We’re building a community of believers learning, asking questions, and going deeper—one verse at a time.

With love and encouragement,

Lashondra
