I used to be that person with seventeen different note-taking apps. Yes, seventeen. Each one was supposed to be the one that finally organized my chaotic brain.
Then Notion AI showed up, promising to revolutionize everything with artificial intelligence. But I had to wonder: would AI actually make me more productive, or was I just outsourcing my thinking?
So I ran an experiment.
The 30-Day Split
For one month, I divided my workday down the middle:
Mornings = Manual notebook
Afternoons = Notion AI
Same meetings. Same brain. Same amount of coffee. Different tools.
What I Discovered
Week 1 nearly broke me. I spent MORE time with Notion AI crafting prompts, editing outputs, fixing mistakes. The AI captured everything but understood nothing. It missed the subtle context that made certain points actually matter. I almost quit.
Week 2 changed everything. I noticed patterns:
My notebook excelled during creative sessions. There's something about pen on paper that unlocks different thinking. I'd draw connections, sketch ideas, process in real-time.
But Notion AI? Absolute beast during information-heavy technical meetings. While I was drowning in jargon, the AI captured every detail I would've missed.
Day 12 was my breakthrough moment.
During a client meeting, I used my notebook to capture the emotional tone the stuff between the words. Then I fed the key quotes to Notion AI for analysis.
It felt like having a superpower.

The Numbers (See Infographic Below)
After 30 days of tracking everything, the data told a clear story:
- Manual notes: Better for memory retention (73% vs 68%)
- Notion AI: Faster information retrieval (45 seconds vs 3.2 minutes)
- Manual notes: More creative insights generated
- Notion AI: More comprehensive action items (92% relevance)
But here's the uncomfortable truth productivity blogs won't tell you:
Notion AI didn't make me productive by doing my thinking. It made me productive by handling the boring stuff so I could focus on thinking that actually mattered.
My Simple Rule Now
After testing everything, I finally have clarity:
Use your notebook when you need to think, create, or read between the lines.
Use Notion AI when you need to capture, organize, or document.
Use both when you want superpowers (manual notes for capture, AI for analysis and action).
The Real Lesson
The most productive people aren't replacing their brains with AI. They're learning to dance with it.
Manual notes keep me human.
Notion AI keeps me organized.
Together, they make me unstoppable.
The future of note-taking isn't choosing sides it's choosing wisely.
I finally deleted 15 of those 17 apps. Kept my notebook and Notion AI. That's all I needed.
