My Journey to Discovering the Power of Essential Oils

Hi there, and welcome to my little corner of the internet!

I’m not a writer by any means, and if you read this, that’s amazing. If not, no worries at all. This blog is really more for me than anyone else—kind of like a way to keep my brain from completely forgetting everything I’ve learned.

I hit perimenopause recently, and let me tell you, memory retention is not my strong point these days. I’ve done my aromatherapy certification, but I often wonder if I’ll remember even half of what I learned. Writing here feels like a way to hold onto some of what I've learned.

This first post is all about my journey to discovering the power of essential oils—my story, the ups and downs, and how I found my way into this world. Over time, I’ll start sharing more about what I’ve learned and what’s worked for me. But for now, I just want to tell you a bit about how I got started, so here goes....

About five years ago, I started experiencing what I now know were perimenopause-type symptoms. I felt constantly anxious, exhausted, and at times, quite depressed. I wanted to find natural ways to support myself, so I tried vitamins and other remedies, but nothing seemed to fully help.

Then nearly two years ago I started looking into aromatherapy and its benefits. I wanted to give it a try but here's the thing: I’ve always been extremely sensitive to fragrances. Any strong smell could trigger migraines, body aches, and a general feeling of drowsiness and lethargy. So, naturally, I was apprehensive about trying essential oils.

I started with some cheap oils from chain stores, hoping maybe they’d be gentle enough—but they had the same effect as other strong fragrances: my pulse points would ache, and I didn't feel good. I began to think perhaps aromatherapy just wasn’t for me.

Everything changed on a trip to Mount Maunganui in our caravan. At that time, I was feeling completely overwhelmed. Even simple things, like going out with my kids, felt way too much. I was panicky and couldn’t catch a deep breath. I just wanted to stay in our caravan in the quiet. My daughter Amelia called me from a stall at a market they'd come accross, that was selling essential oils. Knowing I had been looking into essential oils, she suggested I check it out!

I decided to go. There I met a lovely woman named Verity. She made me a calm roller to try (I’ll share the recipe below) and gave me a sachet of Ningxia Red. I started following her on Instagram and was inspired by her own journey with anxiety. Psychologically, I think I was wired to believe I just couldn’t handle aromatherapy—but hearing her success story made me realize I had nothing to lose by looking into it a bit more.

I smelled the lavender she had there. Lavender had never been a favourite oil. I'd always found it too overpowering, but this lavender was unlike any I had ever experienced. It instantly reminded me of running my hands through my grandmother’s lavender bushes years ago. I realised there was a quality and purity to these oils that was completely different.

From there, I learned about the “Seed to Seal” guarantee and the care that goes into producing high-quality oils. It took some time to get comfortable using the roller Verity had made for me, but the more I used it and read about the benefits she shared, the more I started to believe it could actually work for me.

Eventually, I thought why not give them a bit more of a chance. Verity put a custom bundle together for me to help support my hormone related anxiety that included Ningxia Red, Progessence, Endoflex and the Thieves Household Cleaning concentrate. After using those for a month or two and noticing a difference, I decided to go all in and buy a Young Living Oily Starter Bundle. Guided by Verity, I started learning more. My husband encouraged me to take an aromatherapy course with Holly from Science of Essentials, which deepened my understanding even further.

The more I learned, the more amazed I was. These little bottles, which I had once dismissed as “just perfume,” are actually powerful tools for wellbeing. Now, I use essential oils every day in my home and for myself, helping me navigate anxiety and feel calmer. I even love sharing them with others, because the benefits are so incredible.

What started as a tentative step into aromatherapy has become an essential part of my life. For anyone struggling with anxiety, stress, or just seeking a little self-care, I can’t recommend exploring high-quality essential oils enough.
