One of the Biggest Wallpaper Trends of 2026

Insights from Bobbi Beck’s Creative Director James Mellan-Matulewicz

The soft Oriental trend is emerging as one of the most influential directions in wallpaper design for 2026, offering a calm and refined aesthetic that perfectly reflects the current shift towards warmth and natural balance in interiors. Inspired by traditional East Asian artistry, this style reinterprets delicate handpainted motifs through a contemporary, understated lens.

Unlike the bold Chinoiserie patterns of the past, soft Oriental designs are subtle and layered, featuring painterly foliage, elegant silhouettes, and softly diffused tones that create depth without distraction. This refined approach harmonises beautifully with the warm neutral palettes we are seeing dominate interiors right now.

James Mellan-Matulewicz, Creative Director at Bobbi Beck, says, “The soft Oriental trend is about capturing the calm beauty of traditional Eastern design but reinventing it for the modern home. We wanted to move away from bold patterns and towards something more soothing and organic, creating wallpapers that feel handpainted and authentic, yet understated enough to complement today’s warm, natural interiors.”

These wallpapers complement this evolving colour story effortlessly. Their gentle, nature inspired patterns sit comfortably alongside tactile materials such as rattan and light wood furniture, enhancing the organic warmth that is defining today’s interiors. These designs can be used to surround an entire room or to add a soft decorative backdrop.

The soft Oriental trend is not too dissimilar to the Japandi trend that took the world by storm several seasons ago. However, unlike Japandi, the soft Oriental trend leaves room for print and pattern. By blending Eastern inspired artistry with a muted, natural palette, soft Oriental wallpapers create a tasteful aesthetic that feels both modern and versatile.

“We’re seeing a strong shift towards warm, earthy palettes that create a sense of comfort and ease. The soft Oriental look fits perfectly within this movement, aligning with the principles of quiet luxury. It brings a layered, tranquil feel to interiors, offering subtle sophistication and the refined tranquility that people are increasingly seeking in their homes,” says James.

In an era where homes are becoming sanctuaries, soft Oriental wallpapers capture the essence of 2026 design through their calm, textured finishes and deep connection to the warm, trending colour palettes of the current season.
