How I Won Multiple PhD Scholarships

When people hear that I secured several PhD scholarships on my first try, they often assume it was luck.

The truth is very different. Winning funding is about strategy, preparation, and presenting your story in a way that resonates with funders.

I applied with a clear, well-structured research proposal that explained not just what I wanted to study, but why it mattered. I linked my research to real-world problems and highlighted the wider impact. Funders are not just investing in research; they are investing in people who can make a difference.

I was fortunate to receive support from the Stuart Hall Foundation, the White Rose Consortium, and the University of Sheffield. Each required a slightly different focus, but the principle was the same. My applications told a story. They showed how my academic journey was shaped by barriers, resilience, and a determination to create meaningful change.

For anyone applying for funding, my advice is this: start with the story. Ask yourself why your research matters outside of academia. How does it speak to the world, your community, or an urgent social issue? Once you answer that, structure your proposal with clarity and precision.

Takeaway: Funders want to invest in research that has life beyond the university. Make your application about more than theory. Make it about impact.
