The Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for Your China Z Visa

Moving to China for work or for an internship is an exciting adventure, but navigating the visa bureaucracy can often feel overwhelming. Once you have secured your job or internship offer, the next major hurdle is getting the Z Visa (Work Visa) stamped in your passport. In this post, we are breaking down exactly how to apply for the China Z Visa so you can navigate the process with confidence.

Before You Start: The Document Checklist

Before registering and logging into the China Online Visa Application system, make sure you have your key documents ready. You will need these for the application and the eventual visit to the consulate.

  • Original Passport: Must have at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages.
  • Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit: Often called the "Z Notification Letter". This is the official invitation from the Chinese government. As part of the China International Leadership Programme, the Ireland Sino Institute's school in China will provide this key document to programme participants.
  • Passport Photo: A recently taken color photo (bare-headed, full face) against a white background.
  • Proof of Legal Stay (If applicable): If you are applying outside your country of citizenship, you must provide proof of legal residence (visa, residence permit, etc.) for the country you are currently in.

Step 1: The Online Application

Your journey begins digitally. You must register and log in to the China Online Visa Application (COVA) system at https://consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/.

  1. Get Familiar: Once logged in, we highly recommend clicking 'Step-by-step Guidance' to familiarize yourself with the requirements before you begin typing.
  2. Start the Form: When you are ready, click 'Start an Application' to complete and submit your details.
  3. Upload & Track: Be prepared to upload digital copies of your supporting documents directly to the system. You can log back in at any time to track the status of your application.

Step 2: The Embassy Visit

Once your online application has passed the preliminary review, you need to submit your documents at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate.

Note: Procedures vary depending on your country of application.

  • Appointment: You may need to book an appointment via the system to submit your documents and provide fingerprints at your nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate.
  • Walk-in: Some locations allow applicants to complete this process during regular opening hours without an appointment.

Please check the specific requirements for your local Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

Step 3: Collection and Payment

Congratulations, the hard part is over! When you submit your documents at the consular office, you will be given a Pickup Form. Do not lose this slip of paper—it is the only way to get your passport back.

  • Payment: You will pay the visa fee at the time of collection, not when you submit the application.
  • Collection Day: Bring the Pickup Form and your payment method to the embassy.
  • Can someone else pick it up? Yes. If you are unable to collect the passport yourself, you may authorize a representative to do so. They must present the original pickup form and their own ID, and complete the payment on your behalf.
