Maybe you’ve heard of placebo, which is in simple words, your mind through unshakable belief and trust will heal the body without any real medication. In experiments people received a sugar pill being told is the real medication that will help their illness and they really believed that now they are healed and the mind started healing the body.
Robert Buckman, a clinical oncologist and professor of medicine, concludes that: “Placebos are extraordinary drugs. They seem to have some effect on almost every symptom known to mankind, and work in at least a third of patients and sometimes in up to 60%.”
But have you heard of nocebo? It’s the opposite of placebo. Instead of your mind and belief healing you, it kills you and here is a real example.
In one case study from 2007, researchers noted an individual who attempted to commit suicide by swallowing 26 pills which he believed were antidepressants. Although they were merely placebo tablets without a biological mechanism to harm the patient even at such a high dose, he experienced dangerously low blood pressure and required injections of fluids to be stabilized, based solely on the belief that the overdose of tablets would be deadly. After it was revealed that they were inert capsules, the symptoms went away quickly.
Here is another example where someone really died.
In 1936, in India, recounts Nobel Laureate Bernard Lown in “The Lost Art of Healing,” an astonishing experiment was conducted on a prisoner condemned to die by hanging. He was given the choice instead of being “exsanguinated,” or having his blood let out, because this would be gradual and relatively painless. The victim agreed, was strapped to the bed and blindfolded.
Unbeknownst to him, water containers were attached to the four bedposts and drip buckets set up below. Then after light scratches were made on his four extremities, the fake drip brigade began: First rapidly, then slowly, always loudly. “As the dripping of water stopped, the healthy young man’s heart stopped also. He was dead, having lost not a drop of blood.“
This is how powerful belief is. At this time he was certainly the picture of health. The water injections were continued, since they worked such wonders. He then remained symptom-free for over two months. At this time the final AMA announcement appeared in the press, “nationwide tests show Krebiozen to be a worthless drug in treatment of cancer.”
