What is Kanji (Porridge)? What are the special types of Kanjies ?

Kanji is one of the oldest dishes known to mankind.

🔹It is one of the traditional badges of South India like music and textiles.

🔹Before the arrival of ready-to-eat food like corn flakes muesli or oats into our lives, there was a semi-solid food called kanji; a dish that makes of rice, pulses and millets in a special way to form a hearty feed.



"Hot kanji, a mushy porridge consisting of rice, garlic and fenugreek seeds boiled in water and seasoned just with salt, is served with toasted dried and salted fish (dry fish ) or a (thick chutney) of coconut, green chillies and split gram."

🔹The type of porridge we make shows us the kind of food grains that a particular piece of land has produced.

Importance:

Studies have shown that gut health is closely related to the immune system, health, and mental health. 

Kanji mixes are being seen as diet food, especially by people with lifestyle diseases like diabetes or heart problems. 

According to Rani Gopalakrishnan, who runs a home-based organic and ethnic food business called ‘Millet-In’ in Tiruchi, "Many new mothers are preferring to replace commercial baby cereals with these native porridges".
