A Pop of Colour!

Highlighters are definitely my most used ‘tool’ during my French lessons with learners and I could never imagine teaching without them. I love the way that the use of colour helps my learners to draw out patterns and focus their attention on specific aspects of our learning. Research shows that the use of colour can help learners identify links between structures and also improve retention. Here are two examples of how I use and encourage my learners to work with highlighters. I really hope they are useful and that you can use them in your own learning.

1. Note-taking

Once you have been immersed in a new structure through hearing and seeing it in use, it can be very beneficial to record the formation to help you draw out the patterns and also create ‘models’ of use. Using colour can really help these patterns stand out. This takes time so it holds your attention and helps you better process the information. Remember that the process of physically writing something down also boosts your ability to recall the information. Here is an example:

2. Spotting structures in use

Following a listening activity, I love to give my learners a copy of the transcript and ask them to read back through it to highlight all the examples of the structure we are currently working on. This is a very focused activity as the learners are reading the passage with a specific purpose. At the end of the activity, I confirm how many examples of the structure can be found. Often one or two are missed, so learners then go back through the transcript to find the missing structures. Again, this takes time but spending longer on a short passage with a specific goal really helps to process the information.

Here is a little activity that you could try. Can you highlight all the examples of the Perfect Tense using one colour for verbs taking ‘avoir’ and a different colour for verbs taking ‘être’? Can you also spot the two reflexive verbs in the Perfect Tense? You could highlight these in a third colour.

I’ll post the answers on 15th April. Bon courage!

I hope this blog has been useful 😊
