Believers Maturity

Benny Daniels Weekly Teaching:

Believers’ maturity in Christ is a key theme in the New Testament. Christian maturity refers to growing in faith, character, wisdom, and obedience to God's will. It is the process of becoming more like Jesus and reflecting His nature in our daily lives. Here are key points and Scriptures that illustrate the path to maturity.

1. Maturity Begins with a Solid Foundation in Christ

The journey of spiritual maturity begins with a solid foundation—faith in Jesus Christ. Without a personal relationship with Christ, there can be no true spiritual growth.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:11:
  • "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."

Spiritual growth is built on this foundation as believers grow in their knowledge and understanding of Christ through prayer, study of the Word, and fellowship with other believers.

  • Colossians 2:6-7:
  • "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."

2. Maturity Requires Feeding on God's Word

Just as a newborn baby needs milk to grow physically, believers need spiritual nourishment from the Word of God to grow spiritually. Mature believers move from "spiritual milk" to "solid food"—a deeper understanding and application of Scripture.

  • 1 Peter 2:2:
  • "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation."
  • Hebrews 5:12-14:
  • "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."

Maturity involves not just hearing or reading God’s Word, but practicing it, allowing it to shape one's thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

  • James 1:22:
  • "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

3. Maturity is Marked by Love and Unity

As believers mature in their faith, one of the greatest signs of growth is the increasing love for others and a commitment to unity within the body of Christ. Mature Christians reflect the love of God through their actions, attitudes, and relationships with others.

  • Ephesians 4:15-16:
  • "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work."
  • 1 Corinthians 13:11:
  • "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me."

Mature believers seek peace and unity, putting aside selfishness and division. They exhibit patience, humility, and gentleness in their relationships.

  • Ephesians 4:2-3:
  • "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."

4. Maturity is the Result of Perseverance Through Trials

Trials and hardships are a necessary part of the process of spiritual growth. God uses these challenges to strengthen believers, teaching them to trust in Him and rely on His strength.

  • James 1:2-4:
  • "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Enduring difficulties with faith and patience leads to greater maturity. These experiences refine a believer’s character and develop deeper trust in God.

  • Romans 5:3-5:
  • "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."

5. Maturity Leads to Discernment

A mature believer is able to discern God’s will and make wise decisions based on biblical principles. Spiritual discernment grows as believers deepen their relationship with God and apply His Word in their lives.

  • Philippians 1:9-11:
  • "And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God."

Mature believers can distinguish between right and wrong, truth and error, and live in a way that pleases God.

  • Hebrews 5:14:
  • "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."

6. Maturity Results in Christlike Character

The ultimate goal of spiritual maturity is to become more like Christ. As believers grow, their lives increasingly reflect the character of Jesus—His love, humility, patience, holiness, and obedience to God.

  • Ephesians 4:13:
  • "Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

This transformation is ongoing and involves putting off sinful habits and adopting Christlike behavior.

  • Colossians 3:9-10:
  • "Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."

Conclusion:

Believers’ maturity is an ongoing process that requires a deep connection with Christ, nourishment from God’s Word, love for others, perseverance through trials, and discernment in decision-making. As Christians grow in their faith, they become more like Christ and reflect His glory in the world.

  • 2 Peter 3:18:
  • "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen."

Believers are called to continually grow and mature, always striving to reach the full potential that God has for them in Christ Jesus.
