Why believers should be committed to church

Benny Daniels Weekly Teaching:

Believers are encouraged to commit to church for several reasons rooted in Scripture. Here are a few key reasons along with supporting Bible verses:

1. Fellowship and Encouragement

The church is a place for believers to fellowship and encourage one another. The Bible emphasizes the importance of gathering together to support and uplift one another in faith.

  • Hebrews 10:24-25:
  • "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

  • Acts 2:42:
  • "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

2. Spiritual Growth and Maturity

Church commitment helps believers grow spiritually through the teaching of God's Word, prayer, and worship. Pastors and teachers are given to equip believers for maturity in Christ.

  • Ephesians 4:11-13:
  • "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
  • "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

3. Corporate Worship and Prayer

Believers are called to worship God both individually and corporately. The church is a place for united prayer, worship, and the sacraments.

  • Matthew 18:20:
  • "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."
  • Colossians 3:16:
  • "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

4. Accountability and Protection

Being part of a church provides spiritual accountability and protection. The church helps believers stay on track in their faith and corrects them when they stray.

  • James 5:16:
  • "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

  • Galatians 6:1-2:
  • "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

5. Serving Others

The church provides an opportunity for believers to serve and use their spiritual gifts for the benefit of others. Committing to church enables believers to fulfill their calling to serve.

  • 1 Peter 4:10:
  • "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."

  • Galatians 5:13:
  • "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."

6. Obedience to Christ

The Bible teaches that Jesus loves the church and believers should love and be committed to it as well. The church is described as the body of Christ, and believers are members of this body.

  • Ephesians 5:25:
  • "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."

  • 1 Corinthians 12:27:
  • "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it."

In conclusion, being committed to church aligns with God's design for Christian living. It enables believers to grow spiritually, serve others, worship God collectively, and live out their faith in community.
