Some memories sit in the back of your mind like dust untouched, unspoken, but still shaping the way you breathe. Others come crashing in like a chorus you never forgot.
This week’s activity, Your Story in Song, is one of my favorites in the journal because it doesn’t require you to “go deep” in a painful way. It simply invites you to feel. To slow down. To listen. And to let music do the talking for you when words get too heavy.
Whether you’re a mother trying to understand the girl you once were or a daughter trying to make sense of the woman you’re becoming music has a way of opening doors that conversations sometimes can’t.
Why This Activity Matters
Every major season of your life had a soundtrack even if you didn’t realize it. There were songs that held you while you cried. Songs that made you feel powerful. Songs that taught you survival before you even knew the word. And songs that said what your heart couldn’t.
Identifying these songs isn’t just an emotional exercise it’s storytelling. It helps you map out who you’ve been, who you needed, and who you are right now.
This activity teaches you to:
- Slow down and reflect without force
- Notice patterns in your emotions
- Connect your past to your present
- Allow music to create a safe emotional space
- Begin healing gently, without pressure
How the Activity Works
You’ll choose 5–7 songs that represent different moments in your life.
Moments of:
- Strength
- Hurt
- Confusion
- Growth
- Joy
- Awakening
- Reinvention
This is not about creating a perfect playlist. It’s about documenting your emotional truth softly, honestly, without judgment.

Here are a few songs from my own life that once spoke for me when I couldn’t speak for myself.
“Good Things” – Hari
This was my soft reminder song the one I played when I felt like the whole world was on my back but I still had to show up anyway.
“Lost One” – Jazmine Sullivan
A song that helped me sit with the grief of losing people I wasn’t ready to lose. A reminder that heartbreak comes in many forms.
“Rise Up” – Andra Day
This was my courage song the one that reminded me that even when life knocks you down slowly, you can stand back up slowly too.
“Bag Lady” – Erykah Badu
A softer truth about letting go, piece by piece, without guilt.
“Good Days” – SZA
My healing song. A reminder that I don’t have to rush my growth, and I don’t have to have it all figured out to deserve joy.
“Brown Skin Girl” – Beyoncé ft. Blue Ivy
A love letter to my younger self the girl who needed to hear she was worthy, chosen, and beautiful.
“Fly Away” – Wale
A reminder that stepping into a new version of yourself doesn’t require perfection just honesty.
A Gentle Reminder
Music meets you exactly where you are no pressure, no timeline. As you do this activity, let the songs choose you. Let them reveal the pieces of your story you’re finally ready to hold with compassion.
And if you’re doing this with your daughter or your mother, even better this can open a conversation without either of you needing to push. Healing doesn’t always happen in words. Sometimes it happens in melodies.
Healing doesn’t happen in one day, or in one conversation.
It happens in small moments of awareness… just like this one.
