Art is a psychological process as much as a visual one.

Some pieces come from the most personal corners of my life, created without any expectation that they’d resonate with someone else. When someone chooses that kind of art anyway, it feels like a quiet conversation between two souls who’ve never met. It’s the reminder that honesty in art always finds its way to the right eyes.

This particular piece of art I painted in 2021 was created with deep love and care. It came from a cherished childhood memory — one that, little did I know, would mean even more to me today than it did when I first laid down that opening brushstroke on thick paper.

I made this painting for my Oma from Iowa. I had been trying to think of something handmade to give my Oma and Opa for Christmas — something special, something that would travel well. That’s when I thought of my Oma’s favorite bird, the red cardinal. I remembered, even as a child, how much she adored them. Then I thought of my Opa and how he’d probably get a kick out of a gnome — and so, those two subjects came together naturally.

I started with a pencil sketch, then carefully cut out the shape with scissors. I used a fine detail brush to paint, layering color onto black cardstock with shimmery white and sparkly glitter paints for the background. When it felt just right, I glued the gnome cutout in place.

Once it was completely dry and I was happy with the final look, I tucked it into an envelope and sent it off. When I mailed it, I let it go — hoping it would reach them in time for Christmas, trusting they’d love it. A few days later, they did receive it, and they did love it. That alone brought me so much joy.

Fast forward to January 2026 — my Oma was laid to rest. Both my Oma and Opa have always been incredible grandparents, and I have them to thank for my amazing mom. Five years after creating that painting, I discovered that my Oma had held on to it. Not only that — it had become one of her absolute favorites.

When my mom returned from the Midwest after spending time with family and saying her goodbyes, she brought the card back with her — the gnome and cardinal I had once made with such simple intent. Seeing it again took my breath away. That little painting — just a gnome and his bird friend — suddenly carried immeasurable value. It had come full circle, back to me, infused with so much love and memory.

Every piece I create carries emotion within it — from the first sketch to the final touch. Whether it springs from humor, awe at everyday beauty, reflection on the world’s injustices, or a quiet space in my mind, each work is made with intention. To have someone connect with my art — to have it speak to their heart — is worth more than any price in the world. I hope my art finds a place in your heart, too.
