Ever since I was a teenager, I have always wanted to visit Scotland. Then I discovered Outlander, both the TV Series and the books. For me, it is the culture and history that interests me the most. Learning about the Clans was part of the inspiration for the Highland Floor mat. I wanted a tartan effect as it is a timeless classic.
This pattern is very easy to make. The base of the mat consists of Half double crochet (half treble) moss St. Then you weave yarn through the base, that's it!
A tip before you start though, when weaving the yarn through the base, pin the mat to blocking boards and put it on a table and take regular breaks as it can cause strain on your back if you are bending over for long periods of time.
The pattern has been designed to use 5 colours, but if you wish to make a scrappy floor mat, just make your base 1 colour then thread your yarn scraps through.
The Highland Floor Mat pattern can be purchased for a small fee on Ravelry and my Pattern shop.

Weaving
Pin mat to blocking boards to the measurements of 30” for the length and 18.5” for width.
For each weave, you will need 2 stands of yarn about 1.5m in length each.
Using the long needle, weave yarn as shown below, leaving approx. 8” tail on the end.
Starting in the first Ch Sp on the left side, weave over then under.
The second weave starts as under then over in the same Ch Sp.
There are 2 weaves per Ch Sp as pictured below.
Repeat this pattern following the colour sequence below.

Once all threads have been weaved through, knot the ends together. To do this, use both ends from the same Ch Sp and wrap around and through to form a knot, pull tight to mat base.
