Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you went there?
Not in a funny, "where did I leave my keys?" kind of way.
I mean, standing there, staring at the wall, genuinely wondering if your brain has quietly packed its bags and left without telling you.
Or perhaps you've been halfway through a sentence and suddenly lost a perfectly ordinary word. A word you've known for decades. A word that seems to be floating just out of reach.
If this sounds familiar, I want you to hear something important:
You are not losing your mind.
You are not broken.
And you are definitely not alone.
Brain fog is one of the most common and least talked about symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Researchers estimate that well over half of women experience changes in memory, concentration, and mental clarity during this transition.
The problem is that nobody really warns us.
So when it happens, many women quietly wonder the same terrifying thing:
"Is this dementia?"
The good news is that, for most women, the answer is no.
What's actually happening is that your brain is adapting to major hormonal changes. Oestrogen doesn't just affect reproduction. It also plays a vital role in memory, focus, and energy within the brain. As hormone levels fluctuate, it's completely normal to feel forgetful, scattered, overwhelmed, or mentally exhausted.
Add in disrupted sleep, stress, hot flushes, and anxiety, and it's hardly surprising that your brain feels like it's running on low battery mode.
The most important thing I want you to know is this: This fog does lift.
You are not becoming someone else.
You are moving through a transition.
In my new book, Menopause Madness, I explore why these changes happen and, more importantly, what you can do to support yourself through them. Inside, you'll find gentle movement plans, calming techniques, practical strategies for managing overwhelm, evidence-informed information about HRT, and simple ways to support your body and mind during this stage of life.
Because menopause isn't a personal failure.
It isn't the beginning of the end.
For many women, it's the beginning of understanding themselves in a completely different way.
And even on the foggiest days, you are still you.
