Chad Bilyeu is a Black American writer, historian, and photographer from Cleveland who has been living in Amsterdam since 2009. In 2018, he began writing and self-publishing a comic based on his life as a foreigner, aptly titled CHAD IN AMSTERDAM. Chad is currently working on a new autobiographical graphic novel, THE RE-UP, which Chad writes and designs and is illustrated by Dutch children's book illustrator Juliette de Wit and Serbian designer and illustrator Iva Spasojević. THE RE-UP details Chad’s halcyon days working and studying at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he—unbeknownst to most—also sold copious amounts of weed, back when it was illegal and exciting. THE RE-UP was nominated in 2025 for two Ignatz Awards: Outstanding Comic and Outstanding Series.
