Authority Flows From Abiding

There is a difference between knowing about spiritual authority and actually living from a place of authority in Christ.
Authority is not about how loudly we pray.
It is not about how many spiritual phrases we know.
It is not about having the perfect declaration.
And it certainly isn’t about trying to prove how powerful we are.
Kingdom authority begins with abiding.
Jesus gave us the foundation:
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” — John 15:7 KJV
Look at the order.
Abide in Me.
Let My words abide in you.
Then ask.
Before there is authority flowing through us, there must be surrender happening within us.
Stay Close to Jesus
To abide means to remain.
Stay.
Continue.
Make your home there.
Jesus isn’t inviting us into occasional encounters with Him. He is calling us into a life where His presence becomes our dwelling place.
That changes the way we pray.
When His Word abides in us, our prayers begin to sound more like His heart.
Our desires change.
Our priorities change.
Our language changes.
Even the things we are willing to tolerate begin to change.
We stop asking, “How much can I get away with and still be a Christian?”
Instead, our heart begins asking:
“Jesus, what pleases You?”
That’s intimacy.
And intimacy produces obedience.
His Words Are Spirit and Life
Jesus said:
“The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” — John 6:63 KJV
The Word of God is not simply information to collect.
It is meant to live in us.
This is why Joshua was instructed:
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…” — Joshua 1:8 KJV
Joshua was preparing to lead people into territory he had never occupied before.
And God’s instruction wasn’t:
Study everybody else’s strategy.
It was essentially:
Stay with My Word.
Meditate on it.
Speak it.
Obey it.
Then move.
Some of us are asking God for a new strategy while He is calling us back to the last thing He already said.
Boldness Comes From Knowing Who Sent You
God repeatedly told Joshua:
Be strong. Be courageous. Do not be afraid.
Why?
Because Joshua’s confidence wasn’t supposed to rest in Joshua.
God told him:
“For the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” — Joshua 1:9 KJV
There it is.
Our courage doesn’t come from believing we’re capable of everything.
It comes from knowing Who is with us.
That changes everything.
When God sends you, you don’t have to manufacture confidence.
You can simply obey.
Sometimes you’ll obey while your hands are shaking.
Sometimes you’ll obey while you don’t understand the entire assignment.
Sometimes you’ll obey without knowing what happens after the next step.
But obedience doesn’t require knowing the whole map.
It requires trusting the One giving the directions.
All Things Are Yours—But You Belong to Christ
Paul wrote:
“Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours…” — 1 Corinthians 3:21 KJV
And the passage continues by reminding believers that they belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
That’s important.
Kingdom authority never makes us the center.
Jesus remains the center.
The authority believers exercise is not independent power. It is authority exercised under the lordship of Christ.
That means we don’t have to strive to establish our importance.
We don’t have to compete.
We don’t have to chase titles.
We don’t have to convince everyone that we’re anointed.
Just belong to Jesus.
Let Him decide where He sends you.
Let Him decide how He uses you.
Let Him receive the glory when fruit comes from your obedience.
Spiritual Gifts Without Love Miss the Point
This is where 1 Corinthians 13 becomes especially important.
Paul writes:
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” — 1 Corinthians 13:1 KJV
We can talk about prophecy.
We can talk about deliverance.
We can talk about spiritual warfare.
We can talk about authority.
But God has never given spiritual gifts so we can use them to elevate ourselves above people.
The gifts are supposed to serve people.
Love matters.
If we discern something, love should govern what we do with that discernment.
If we pray for someone’s freedom, love should be our motivation.
If God entrusts us with revelation, love should influence how we communicate it.
If we intercede for nations, communities and families, we are doing it because God loves people.
Spiritual Warfare Is Not About Hating People
This distinction matters.
People are not trophies to conquer.
People are souls Jesus died for.
When we pray against darkness, our prayer isn’t that human beings would be destroyed.
Our desire is that people would be delivered, healed, awakened and reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.
That’s why the cry for billions of souls for Christ matters.
We’re not building our own kingdom.
We’re asking for people everywhere to encounter the King.
People from every nation.
Every language.
Every background.
Every neighborhood.
Every economic level.
Every place God sends the Gospel.
Billions for Christ.
Not because billions is an impressive number.
Because every number represents a person.
And every person represents a soul.
Authority Without Intimacy Becomes Performance
We have to guard against becoming more fascinated with spiritual manifestations than with Jesus Himself.
Jesus is the treasure.
Not the gift.
Not the platform.
Not the revelation.
Not the title.
Not the audience.
Jesus.
If everything else disappeared, would He still be enough?
That question keeps the heart anchored.
Because the safest place for spiritual authority is in the hands of someone who doesn’t need authority to feel important.
Their identity has already been settled.
I belong to Jesus.
Stay in the Vine
There may be seasons when God asks you to pray intensely.
There may be seasons of intercession.
There may be spiritual battles.
There may be moments when you have to stand firmly on the Word of God and refuse to move.
But don’t become so focused on warfare that you forget where your strength comes from.
Return to the Vine.
Stay connected.
Stay surrendered.
Stay teachable.
Stay in His Word.
Stay in love.
And when He says speak—speak.
When He says pray—pray.
When He says move—move.
When He says be still—be still.
Because the greatest evidence of spiritual authority isn’t how impressive we sound.
It’s that when the King speaks—
we obey.

Reflection: Am I trying to operate for Jesus, or am I allowing what I do for Jesus to flow from abiding with Him?
Prayer: Jesus, teach me to abide in You. Let Your Word live richly within me. Purify my motives, govern my words with love, and teach me to recognize Your voice and obey You quickly. May everything You entrust to me point people back to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
