Why Are We So Hard on Ourselves? Learning to Give Ourselves the Same Grace God Gives Us ❤️

Have you ever noticed how hard we can be on ourselves?

I mean, really hard on ourselves.

We can make one mistake and think about it for days. We can replay conversations in our heads, question our decisions, and keep reminding ourselves of all the things we wish we had done differently. Sometimes, we can be our own worst enemy without even realizing it.

And I've been thinking about why we do that.

Why is it so easy for us to give other people grace, but so hard to give that same grace to ourselves? Why can we encourage someone else, remind them that God loves them, and tell them that everything is going to be okay, but when it comes to us, we struggle to believe those same things?

Sometimes I think we forget that we're human, too.

We are going to make mistakes. We're going to have days when we don't get it right. We're going to have moments when we feel like we should be further along than we are. And sometimes, we're going to disappoint ourselves.

But does that mean we're failures? Does that mean God loves us any less?

No. It doesn't.

So why do we keep treating ourselves like we have to be perfect to be worthy of love?

I've been learning that God doesn't ask me to have everything figured out. He doesn't ask me to be perfect. He asks me to trust Him, to keep growing, and to let Him work in the areas of my life that still need healing.

And sometimes, that means letting Him work on the way I see myself, too.

Learning to Give Ourselves Grace

I think sometimes we get so caught up in what we did wrong that we forget what God says is true about us.

We focus on our mistakes instead of His mercy. We focus on what we haven't done instead of how far He's already brought us. We get so frustrated with ourselves for not being where we think we should be that we forget God is still working on us.

And maybe that's where we need to start changing the way we think.

The next time you catch yourself being hard on yourself, stop for a minute.

Take a breath.

Ask yourself, "Would I talk to someone I love this way?"

Would you tell someone you love that they're a failure because they made a mistake? Would you remind them over and over again of something they're already struggling with? Would you tell them they're not good enough because they're still trying to figure things out?

Probably not.

So why do we do it to ourselves?

I'm not saying we shouldn't take responsibility for our mistakes. We should. We need to be willing to learn, grow, apologize, and make changes when we need to.

But there's a difference between recognizing where we need to grow and constantly beating ourselves up.

God can correct us without us having to tear ourselves apart.

We can acknowledge that we got something wrong without believing that everything about us is wrong.

That is something I think we all need to be reminded of sometimes.

What Does God's Grace Look Like When We're Hard on Ourselves?

For me, I think it starts with remembering what God says instead of believing every negative thought that comes into my mind.

When I start thinking I'm not enough, I need to remind myself that my worth isn't based on how perfectly I do everything.

When I start thinking about my mistakes, I need to remember that God's mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).

When I feel like I'm not where I should be in life, I need to remind myself that God is still writing my story.

And when I feel discouraged with myself, I need to remember that God isn't finished working in me.

Philippians 1:6 reminds us that God will continue the good work He began in us.

Think about that for a minute.

God is still working on you. He's still teaching you. He's still growing you. There are still things He's helping you understand about yourself, about Him, and about the person He's calling you to become.

You don't have to have it all together today.

You don't have to have every struggle figured out.

And you don't have to punish yourself for being in a season where you're still learning.

Sometimes, we just need to give ourselves a little grace and trust God with the process.

Stop Letting Your Mistakes Define You

One thing I think we forget is that making a mistake doesn't mean we are a mistake.

Having a hard day doesn't mean we're failing at life. Struggling with something doesn't mean we're weak. And needing more time to heal, grow, or figure things out doesn't mean we're behind.

We're human.

We have feelings. We have struggles. We have things from our past that we're still working through. We have moments when our faith feels strong and moments when we have to remind ourselves to trust God all over again.

That's part of being human.

But we can't keep holding ourselves hostage to things God is trying to help us heal from.

If you've made a mistake, learn from it.

If you've hurt someone, take responsibility and do what you can to make it right.

If there's something in your life that needs to change, ask God to help you change it.

But please don't let your mistakes convince you that you're unworthy of love, grace, or another chance.

God's grace doesn't mean we never get anything wrong. It means our failures don't have to be the end of our story.

And I'm so thankful for that.

Because if we're honest, we all need grace. Not just when we mess up in big ways, but in the everyday moments when we're frustrated with ourselves, when we're comparing our lives to someone else's, or when we feel like we're just not doing enough.

We need to remember that God sees us differently than we sometimes see ourselves.

And maybe learning to give ourselves grace starts with learning to believe that.

A Reminder for the Days You Struggle With Yourself

If you're reading this and you've been really hard on yourself lately, I want you to remember something.

You are allowed to be a work in progress.

You are allowed to have things you're still learning.

You are allowed to look back and wish you had handled something differently without letting that regret take over your life.

You can want to grow and still love the person you are today.

You can trust God to change things in you without believing that you're not enough right now.

And you can have a hard day without forgetting all the good things God says about you.

Sometimes, we need to speak God's truth over ourselves until our hearts start believing it again.

I am worthy of love.

I am loved by God.

I am not alone.

God is still working in me.

I don't have to be perfect to receive His grace.

And neither do you.

The next time those negative thoughts start creeping in, I hope you'll pause and remember that God is not asking you to figure everything out on your own. He wants you to bring those struggles to Him. He wants you to trust Him with the parts of yourself that you're still learning to understand.

Give yourself permission to grow.

Give yourself permission to learn.

And give yourself permission to receive the same grace you so freely believe God gives to others.

Because His grace is for you, too.

Not just the version of you who has everything together. Not just the version of you who gets it right.

You, right where you are, still learning, still growing, and still becoming who God created you to be.

And I think sometimes we need to stop being so hard on ourselves long enough to remember that.

God is still writing your story. Don't let the chapter you're struggling with convince you that the whole story isn't beautiful.

A Little Prayer ❤️

God, please help me be kinder to myself.

Help me recognize when I'm being too hard on myself and remind me to look at myself through Your eyes. When I start focusing on my mistakes, help me remember Your grace. When I feel like I'm not enough, remind me that my worth comes from You.

Help me learn from the things I get wrong without allowing shame to take over. Teach me how to forgive myself, how to let go of things I can't change, and how to trust You with the things I'm still working through.

Remind me that I don't have to be perfect. I just have to keep coming to You, keep trusting You, and keep allowing You to work in my heart.

Thank You for loving me on the days when I struggle to love myself. Thank You for being patient with me, for giving me new mercies, and for reminding me that I'm never walking through this life alone.

Help me give myself the same grace that You so freely give me.

In Jesus' name, Amen. ❤️

Something to think about today: What if the next time you started being hard on yourself, you stopped and asked, "What would it look like to give myself God's grace in this moment?"

Maybe that's where we begin. One thought at a time. One prayer at a time. One reminder at a time that we are loved, we are still growing, and God isn't finished with our story yet.
