A table, a printer, and a mystery to solve together. Last Light Observatory is a cooperative paper puzzle game for a family night or small private gathering. This guide shows exactly what the host does, without revealing the answers.
1. Choose one host
The host keeps the separate answer guide and offers hints. The other 2–6 people are the players. The suggested age is 10+ with reading support as needed. Because the host can see the solutions, choose that person before anyone opens the files.
2. Open the illustrated edition
Use the download named last-light-observatory-1.0-illustrated-CURRENT.zip. It contains six player pages, a separate three-page host guide, and start-here instructions. An earlier text-focused edition is also included with the product; both use the same puzzles. The current edition adds an observatory landscape and radio illustration. Decorative artwork is labeled so players know it is not a hidden clue.
3. Print and set the table
Print the six player pages single-sided on US Letter paper. For A4, use Fit to Printable Area. Black-and-white printing works. Bring pencils and scrap paper. You do not need locks, envelopes, scissors, an app, or an internet connection to play. Keep the host guide out of sight.
4. Introduce the mission
Read the mission briefing aloud: a storm has cut the observatory off from the valley, and the night crew must restore its beacon. Place the four station pages on the table. Players can start with the Star Chart, Courier Board, Cipher Strip, or Shift Log in any order. They can work together or split into smaller teams. Each station produces a four-digit code.
5. Give help one hint at a time
When someone asks for help, use the next hint for that station in the host guide. Let the players try it before offering another. Give them the final console sheet when they want it; it explains how to combine their results. If the final answer is wrong, check copied digits and positions before revealing a solution.
6. Let the ending breathe
There is no required timer. The intended 20–40 minute duration is a design target, not a measured result from a live group playtest. Difficulty and group pacing remain unvalidated. Let your group continue if they are enjoying the puzzle. The host guide includes the ending to read after success.
Is this a fit?
Choose it if you want a small, screen-free cooperative puzzle activity with printable instructions and a separate hint guide. It is a digital download, not a physical escape-room set or a professionally facilitated event. The $9 purchase permits printing for your household or your own private event; redistribution and commercial event use are not included.
