Meet Darryn
For years, my weekly routine looked the same: sitting across from primary and high school guitar students, watching them fight off yawns, struggle to stay engaged, and eventually quit.
I loved teaching, but I was fighting a losing battle against the curriculum.
Most of the available sheet music was locked in the past—either strict classical pieces or decades-old rock and jazz. My students weren’t lazy; they just didn't care about the music they were being forced to play. There was a massive disconnect between the music they loved in their daily lives and the music on their stands.
Everything changed when I decided to break the rules. I sat down and arranged a piece from the Interstellar soundtrack for my guitar ensemble.
The shift was instant. The room lit up. Students who used to count down the minutes were suddenly enthusiastic, arriving early to rehearsals, and actually practicing at home. My student retention skyrocketed.
That was my lightbulb moment: movie and video game soundtracks aren't just engaging, they are packed with incredible educational value. They teach dynamics, rhythm, and expression just as well as traditional pieces, but with one massive bonus: the kids actually want to play them.
Today, my mission is to help guitar teachers banish boredom from their studios. I arrange cinematic and video game music that hooks students from the very first note, alongside sharing practical music tech tips and educational content to make your teaching life easier.
I know this approach works because I’ve seen it scale from my own studio all the way to university level, where the UWA Guitar Ensemble performed one of my custom arrangements.
When I’m not arranging music or teaching, you can usually find me chasing my next caffeine hit (I'm a self-confessed coffee addict), diving into a video game, or playing a fiercely competitive game of ping pong.
