The Luzzu is a traditional fishing boat native to Malta, often painted in bold hues of red, yellow, blue, and green. What makes it truly unique are the Eyes of Osiris painted on each side of the bow — an ancient Phoenician symbol said to ward off evil and protect those at sea. You’ll spot dozens of these boats gently floating in the picturesque harbor of Marsaxlokk, offering not just a charming photo opportunity, but a glimpse into the island’s deep-rooted fishing culture.
🇲🇹 Discover Malta Like a Local: A 6-Day Dream Itinerary
If you’re dreaming of crystal-clear waters, ancient cities, and unforgettable Mediterranean views, Malta should be at the top of your travel list.
This is my Malta and after living here for over 30 years, I still fall in love with this island every time I explore it. Now, I’m sharing that local love with you through a carefully crafted plan to help you skip the stress and experience the island like a pro.
💛 Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip,
here are some quick essentials to help you travel like a local
- Best Time to Visit: April to June and September to October offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and perfect sightseeing conditions. July and August are hot and busy but ideal for beach lovers.
- Currency: Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for markets and small shops.
- Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated, around 5-10% in restaurants if service is good.
- Emergency Numbers: Dial 112 for emergencies (police, fire, ambulance).
- Mobile & Internet: Pick up a local SIM card at the airport or shops for affordable data. Malta has good coverage island-wide.
- Local Customs: Maltese people are warm and friendly; a smile and simple greetings like “Bonġu” (Good morning) go a long way!
🍴 Must-Try Maltese Foods
Don’t miss these local flavors, each bite tells a story of Malta’s rich culinary heritage:
- Pastizzi: Flaky pastry pockets filled with ricotta or mushy peas, a perfect snack anytime!
- Rabbit Stew (Fenkata): Malta’s national dish, slow-cooked with herbs and wine.
- Gbejniet: Traditional Maltese cheese made from sheep or goat milk, often enjoyed fresh or dried.
- Ħobż biż-żejt: Rustic Maltese bread with olive oil, tomatoes, capers, and tuna, simple and delicious!
- Kinnie: A unique Maltese soft drink made from bitter oranges and herbs, refreshing and unlike anything else.
