A Good Name: The True Measure of Wealth

Before You Read This Blog…

I had a revelation while watching the show For Life. The main character, Aaron, was about to sign a plea deal when the lawyer, trying to intimidate him, asked a powerful question:

“What would your wife think?”

That moment hit deep. It reminded me that a name is more than riches—it carries weight, honor, and legacy.

Our name represents who we are, the choices we make, and how we are remembered by those we love. When we leave this earth, people won’t talk about how much money we had, but about the kind of person we were.

This is why Proverbs 22:1 is so profound:

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.”

Now, let’s dive into what it truly means to value your name over wealth.

In a world where success is often measured by material wealth, the Bible offers a profound truth in Proverbs 22:1:

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.”

This verse reminds us that a person’s character and reputation hold greater value than financial gain. While money can buy luxury and comfort, it cannot buy the trust, respect, or honor that come from living a life of integrity.

The Importance of Character

A good name reflects who we truly are—it is built on integrity, honesty, and ethical living. Unlike wealth, which can come and go, our character defines how we are perceived by others and, more importantly, how we honor God in our daily lives. A person with a strong moral foundation earns respect and trust, making their “good name” a lasting legacy.

Character Over Wealth

• Money can buy influence, but not integrity.

• Riches may attract attention, but true respect is earned through honest living.

• A person with a good reputation will always have opportunities, even in financial hardship.

The Lasting Value of a Good Reputation

While money can be lost in an instant, a good name endures. People remember how we treat them, how we keep our word, and whether we stand firm in our values. Proverbs teaches that wealth is fleeting, but a good reputation provides long-term security.

Why a Good Name Matters More Than Money:

• It fosters trust in personal and professional relationships.

• It provides a sense of security that material wealth cannot.

• It carries lasting influence that continues even after we’re gone.

The Social Impact of a Good Reputation

A strong reputation can open doors to opportunities that money cannot. People are more willing to help, support, and invest in those they trust. While wealth may gain temporary favor, it does not guarantee true respect or meaningful relationships.

Consider This:

• Would you rather be known as someone wealthy but dishonest, or as someone trustworthy and kind?

• When facing challenges, who do people turn to—the one with money or the one with wisdom and integrity?

• What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

Living Out Proverbs 22:1

To build and maintain a good name, we must:

Be honest and trustworthy in our words and actions.

Treat others with kindness and respect, valuing relationships over riches.

Keep our commitments and let our integrity speak louder than our wealth.

Seek God’s favor above all, trusting that He will provide for our needs.

Final Thoughts

At the end of life, people won’t remember how much money we had, but they will remember how we made them feel, how we stood for truth, and how we honored God. True wealth lies in a name that is respected, trusted, and cherished.

Would you rather have riches or a reputation of honor?

Choose wisely, for a good name lasts far beyond silver and gold.
