Did They Ever Really Know Him?

It’s both sad and crazy how people who once claimed to know Christ can walk away from Him and turn to another religion—as if they never knew Him at all. As if they never truly encountered His presence, His love, or His truth.

It really makes you wonder: Did they ever really know Him in the first place?

The Bible talks about this in Matthew 24:24, where Jesus says, “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” That verse is powerful. It means the deception will be so strong, so convincing, that even the elect—God’s chosen—would be deceived if it were possible. But the key part is: it’s not possible. Not for the true elect. Not for those who are genuinely rooted in Christ.

So then, how is it that people who grew up Christian, went to church, maybe even preached or served, end up abandoning the faith and going somewhere else? It makes me stop and think: maybe they were never truly rooted. Maybe they never fully surrendered. Maybe they never really knew God—they just knew about Him.

Because when you truly encounter Jesus—when you’ve experienced His love, His grace, and His power—it changes you. It marks you. And no other religion or belief system can compare. Nothing else satisfies.

We’re living in a time where deception is growing, and the lines are being blurred. People are chasing what “feels” good or “sounds” spiritual, but they’re walking away from truth. And it breaks my heart.

Let this be a reminder to all of us to stay close to Jesus. To not just be familiar with Him, but to truly know Him. Because when you know the real thing, you won’t be fooled by the counterfeit.
