Have you ever felt unloved simply because no one was doing anything for you? Maybe you’ve thought, If they really loved me, they would help me more. They would check on me. They would do for me like I do for them. It’s easy to measure love by what we receive, but is that what love truly is?
Many of us have been conditioned to associate love with actions—gifts, favors, time, and attention. And while love often expresses itself through these things, love itself is not defined by them. The world teaches a transactional version of love: If you do for me, then I know you love me. But the Word of God teaches something different.
What Does the Bible Say About Love?
1. Love Is Not Just About Receiving
• “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-5
• Love is a condition of the heart, not a transaction. It’s not based on how much someone gives you but on their willingness to care, support, and be present in their own way.
2. God’s Love Is the Example
• “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
• God didn’t wait for us to do something for Him before He loved us. His love was freely given, not based on what we could offer in return.
3. Love Is Not Always Loud or Obvious
• “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” – 1 John 3:18
• Love isn’t always grand gestures or constant affirmations. Sometimes, love is in the little things—prayers spoken on your behalf, silent sacrifices made for your good, or even someone giving you space when you need it.
Breaking Free from Transactional Love
If you only feel loved when someone is doing something for you, it may be time to shift your perspective. Ask yourself:
• Do I believe I am loved even when I’m not receiving something tangible?
• Am I measuring love by the world’s standards or God’s?
• Do I recognize the different ways people express love?
God’s love is the foundation of all love. When you understand that His love is unconditional, you won’t rely on what people do for you to determine if you are loved. Instead, you will rest in the truth that you are already deeply loved no conditions, no transactions, just grace.
So, the next time you feel unloved, pause and ask yourself: Am I looking for love in what I receive, or am I trusting in the love God has already given me?
Because true love isn’t about what you get it’s about what already exists, whether you see it or not.
