“How do you know if it’s God speaking or just your emotions?”
It’s a question I get asked often and one I’ve had to ask myself.
The truth is, I didn’t always know the difference. Sometimes I’d feel something so strong, so deep, that I’d assume it was God. But over time, through prayer and intimacy, I started to recognize a pattern. I realized something key: my emotions often shout, but God speaks with a calm assurance.
🔎 Emotions Rise God Rests
When I feel my voice rise up, when I feel tension or urgency that pressures me into a quick decision that’s often my emotions, not God. Emotions will push, but God leads. There’s a stillness in His voice, even when He’s correcting or convicting.
🧠 What You Feed Your Mind Matters
Sometimes we can’t hear God because our minds are full of noise TV shows, social media, ungodly conversations, or just life’s chaos. That clutter drowns out the whisper of the Holy Spirit.
The more I began to feed my spirit with the Word of God, sermons, and even prophetic worship instrumentals, the more I could feel when God was near. The more I recognized His character, the easier it became to recognize His voice.
Quick Gem 💎 : Scripture vs. The Word
A lot of times, people get scripture mixed up with the Word. But here’s the truth:
Scripture is the inspired Word of God yes.
But God is the Word (John 1:1).
The Word is alive, active, and personal it’s not just a book, it’s a person: Jesus.
So yes, you’ll get it from the Bible. But you’ll also get it from His Spirit from sermons, prophetic messages, and just sitting in His presence, listening.
💧 It Feels Like a Download
When God speaks to me, it doesn’t usually come through my logical mind it pours into my spirit.
It’s like a divine download, like living water being poured straight into me. It’s not forced. It’s peaceful. It’s clear. It aligns with His Word and brings confirmation.
🗝️
If you’re struggling to know if it’s you or God, be still. Fast. Pray. Shut down the noise. And ask God to reveal Himself to you. He’s not hiding, He’s just waiting for you to make room.
You can hear God. You will hear God. And His voice will always align with His Word and His nature.
