Keep Your Eyes on the Narrow Road

Imagine trying to drive a car while looking backward the entire time. Your eyes are glued to the rearview mirror, fixated on what’s behind you past mistakes, old relationships, disappointments, and failures. You’re so focused on what’s already passed that you don’t even see what’s ahead. Before you know it, you veer off course, crash into obstacles, or completely miss your destination.

This is exactly what happens when we live life constantly looking back. God never intended for us to navigate our future while being stuck in our past. In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul reminds us:

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

God calls us to press forward, to keep our eyes on the road ahead. The path He has set before us is narrow (Matthew 7:13-14), requiring focus, faith, and obedience. But how can we walk the narrow road if we’re too busy looking over our shoulders?

Too often, we let past hurts, regrets, and even past successes dictate our present and future. We hesitate to step out in faith because of past failures. We struggle to trust God’s plan because we’re still holding on to what didn’t work out before. But God says, “Look ahead. Keep your eyes on Me.”

Think about driving. The rearview mirror is small for a reason it’s only meant for quick glances, not for constant focus. The windshield, however, is large because that’s where your attention should be. In the same way, our past may serve as a lesson, but it should never be our focus. God has something greater ahead, and we won’t see it if we’re always looking behind us.

So, ask yourself today: What am I holding on to that’s keeping me from moving forward? Am I letting my past dictate my future? It’s time to take your eyes off the rearview mirror and fix them on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).

God is calling you forward. The road ahead may be narrow, but with Him as your guide, you’ll reach the destination He has prepared for you. Keep your eyes on the road your future in Christ is far greater than anything in your past.
