They Don’t Like You Because You Obey God

Standing Firm in Faith Even When It Makes You Unpopular

Have you ever wondered why some people dislike you, even when you’ve done nothing wrong? Have you ever felt excluded, misunderstood, or judged because of your commitment to follow God? Here’s the hard truth: They don’t like you because you obey God.

It’s not personal—it’s spiritual. Obeying God sets you apart. It convicts those who are comfortable in compromise, and it challenges those who live by the world’s standards. It’s not you they dislike—it’s the light within you that exposes the darkness around them.

Obedience to God Isn’t Always Popular

Following God means walking a narrow path. It means choosing righteousness over acceptance, truth over popularity, and holiness over compromise. It means living by God’s standards, even when the world pressures you to conform.

John 15:18-19 says:

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

When you obey God, you become a reflection of His truth, and the world rejects what it doesn’t understand. They disliked Jesus for His obedience, and they’ll dislike you for yours. But take heart—your approval doesn’t come from them. It comes from God.

Why Obedience Provokes Dislike

1. Your Obedience Convicts Their Disobedience:

• When you live by God’s standards, it exposes the compromise in others. Your light shines on their darkness, making them uncomfortable.

• Ephesians 5:11 – “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”

2. Your Commitment Challenges Their Complacency:

• When you refuse to conform, it challenges those who are comfortable in sin. Your faithfulness reveals their lukewarmness.

• Revelation 3:16 – “So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

3. Your Boldness Intimidates Their Insecurity:

• When you boldly stand for truth, it intimidates those who are afraid to do the same. Your courage magnifies their fear.

• Proverbs 28:1 – “The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”

4. Your Faithfulness Exposes Their Idolatry:

• When you put God first, it exposes the idols in others’ lives—whether it’s money, status, or approval.

• Matthew 6:24 – “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”

Biblical Examples of Obedience Bringing Opposition

You’re not alone in facing rejection for obeying God. The Bible is filled with stories of faithful followers who were hated, persecuted, and misunderstood because of their obedience:

• Noah – Obeyed God and built an ark, enduring mockery and rejection for his faith (Genesis 6).

• Daniel – Remained faithful in prayer despite the king’s decree, leading to persecution in the lions’ den (Daniel 6).

• Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – Refused to bow to the golden idol, facing the fiery furnace for their obedience (Daniel 3).

• Jesus – The ultimate example of obedience. He was hated, rejected, and crucified for fulfilling God’s purpose (John 15:25).

2 Timothy 3:12 warns us:

“In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

Obedience to God will cost you. It may cost you relationships, popularity, and approval. But the reward of pleasing God is worth every rejection.

How to Handle Rejection for Obeying God

1. Don’t Take It Personally:

• It’s not you they hate—it’s who you represent. When they reject you, they’re rejecting the God in you.

• Luke 10:16 – “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

2. Stand Firm in Your Faith:

• Don’t compromise your obedience to gain acceptance. Stand firm in your convictions, even if it makes you unpopular.

• 1 Corinthians 15:58 – “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.”

3. Love Them Anyway:

• Respond to hate with love. Pray for those who reject you and show them Christ’s love through your actions.

• Matthew 5:44 – “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

4. Focus on Pleasing God, Not People:

• Your purpose is to please God, not people. Don’t compromise your obedience for temporary acceptance.

• Galatians 1:10 – “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

5. Find Comfort in God’s Approval:

• Rejection from people is insignificant compared to approval from God. Seek His affirmation above all else.

• Matthew 25:23 – “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

Obedience Will Cost You—But So Will Disobedience

Here’s the truth: Obedience will cost you, but so will disobedience.

• Obedience to God will cost you acceptance from the world. It will cost you popularity, approval, and even relationships. But it will reward you with God’s favor, blessings, and eternal reward.

• Disobedience, on the other hand, will cost you your peace, your purpose, and your destiny. It will delay God’s promises, disrupt your path, and distance you from God’s presence.

You just have to choose what you’re willing to pay.

Deuteronomy 30:19 presents the choice clearly:

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”

Final Thoughts: Obey God, No Matter Who Disapproves

Obedience to God will make you unpopular. It will cost you relationships, acceptance, and approval. But the reward is far greater than the rejection. You’re not living for their applause—you’re living for God’s approval.

Matthew 5:10-12 encourages us:

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.”

Choose your cost wisely.

Obey God, no matter what it costs.

Because the cost of disobedience is far greater.
