Wanna Know a Person? Just Listen to Them Speak

They say actions speak louder than words, but often, it’s our words that unveil the deepest truths about who we are.

If you really want to know someone, just listen to them speak.

Words as Windows to the Heart

Jesus taught in Matthew 12:34, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Our words reflect our inner selves—our beliefs, values, fears, and hopes.

Consciously or unconsciously, we reveal our true nature through our speech.

Insights from Investigative Practices

As an avid viewer of investigative shows, I’ve observed that detectives and interrogators are trained to discern truth from deception by analyzing speech patterns.

This practice, known as statement analysis, involves examining the language individuals use to detect inconsistencies or signs of deceit. Investigators understand that language moves so quickly that no one has complete control over what they say, often revealing more than intended.

This method aligns with the biblical principle that our words mirror our hearts. Just as investigators detect lies through speech analysis, we can gain insights into a person’s character by attentively listening to their words.

What to Listen For: Clues to Character

1. Encouragement or Criticism:

• Does the person uplift others or frequently criticize? A heart filled with love speaks life, while bitterness manifests in negativity.

2. Honesty or Deception:

• Truthful individuals speak with integrity. Deceptive language often includes evasiveness or over-embellishment.

3. Gratitude or Complaint:

• Grateful people express appreciation, even in adversity. Chronic complainers may harbor discontent.

4. Humility or Pride:

• Humble individuals acknowledge others, using inclusive language. Prideful speech often centers around self-promotion.

The Power of Words

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Our words can build up or tear down, inspire hope or sow despair. The way someone speaks about others, themselves, and life reveals the state of their soul.

Intentional Listening

To truly know someone:

• Observe Patterns: Is there a recurring theme of negativity or positivity?

• Assess Tone and Emotion: What emotions underlie their words?

• Consider the Unspoken: Silence or hesitation can indicate hidden thoughts or feelings.

Reflecting on Our Own Speech

Our words not only reveal others’ hearts but also our own. Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” By monitoring our speech, we can gain insight into our inner selves and make necessary changes.

People reveal themselves every time they speak. If you want to truly know someone, just listen. Remember, others are also listening to you. Let’s strive to speak words that reflect love, truth, and humility.
