Why are Abrahamic religions so sexist?

Why are Abrahamic religions so sexist?

This is a long answer,

and I hope that people would have the courtesy to read through it or at least the summary, especially when the question is a serious accusation to God and his rules, or at least to the people who associate themselves with him (if you don’t believe that there is a God)

Summary

Sexism's root is superiority and causes Injustice and oppression. Which are not only forbidden but are heavy crimes.

Modern-day Judaism and Christianity have diverted from their original forms and thus can’t be used to say that Abrahamic religions are sexist or not.

Since Islam is the only one that is intact in its original form and language, it will be used to answer the question.

Women are mentioned, presented & treated respectfully & fairly in the Quran & The prophet's teachings peace be upon him.

Women were given rights and privileges 1,200 years before any other women had them (and some rights remain available only to Muslim women up to this day).

  • Social rights & Privileges, like inheritance, right of marriage, divorce, protection from abuse, and children's nursery.
  • Financial Rights & Privileges, like independent financial status, the right to be financially supported, and freedom from financial responsibilities.
  • Education & Knowledge Rights and Privileges, where it is mandatory to attain necessary knowledge.
  • Political Rights and Privileges, like voting, consultation, providing political protection, and participation in political and military events.
  • Sexual Rights and Privileges, where sex and sexual satisfaction are rights for women (and men) that are illegal to be deprived of.

Based on what you call the Abrahamic religion sexist when women have been fighting the past 200 years for rights that the Abrahamic religion handed them over to women on a plate of gold 1450 years ago within a period of few years without them moving a finger?!!

Intro

Who said they were sexist?

Sexism (and racism), is caused by superiority and causes Injustice and oppression.

which are not only forbidden but are heavy crimes.

God says:

( 146 ) I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them.

[Al-Araf-146]

( 42 ) And never think that Allah is unaware of what the unjust do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].
( 43 ) Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them, and their hearts are void.

[Ibraheem- 42–43]

The Prophet peace be upon him said:

  • He who has a weight of an atom of superiority in his heart will never enter heaven.
  • Injustice is darkness on judgment day
  • Be aware of the prayer of the oppressed, for there is no veil between it and God.

The Current Status of the Abrahamic Religions

(The following section is valid if the Quran was the word of God)

According to what God said in the Quran,

Current-day Judaism and Christianity, not only they have diverted from what they originally were, but also they were meant only for their people and their time, they were never meant to be applicable until this day, hence there was no need for them to be preserved for beyond their periods.

So you should not be able to say that Abrahamic religions are sexist (or not) based on current-day Judaism and Christianity.

Now of Islam, it is still preserved in its original form and language as it was 1400 years ago, the Quran is preserved and the teachings of the prophet -Peace be upon him- are recorded, audited, and verified.

So, If you want to say that the Abrahamic religions are sexist, Islam will be your proof.

Does This Sound Sexist to you?

Women in the Quran

( 195 ) And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another.

[Aal-Imran - 195]

( 19 ) O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.

[Al-Nisa’a - 19]

( 32 ) And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others (he is addressing men and women). For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of his bounty. Indeed Allah is ever, of all things, Knowing.

[Al-Nisa’a - 32]

( 49 ) To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He gifts to whom He wills female [children], and He gifts to whom He wills males

[Al-Shura49-]

( 4 ) And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient

[Al-Noor - 4]

( 23 ) Indeed, those who [falsely] accuse chaste, unaware and believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter; and they will have a great punishment
( 24 ) On a Day when their tongues, their hands and their feet will bear witness against them as to what they used to do.
( 25 ) That Day, Allah will pay them in full their deserved recompense, and they will know that it is Allah who is the perfect in justice.

[Al-Noor-23–25]

( 1 ) Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.

[Al-Mujadela - 1]

( 97 ) Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.

[Al-Nahl 97]

( 15 ) And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months…..

[Al-Ah’qaf - 15]

Women in the Prophet’s teaching -Peace be upon him-

  • Women are men’s twins, for them what’s for men, and upon them what is upon men
  • Do not hate girls, for they are the pleasant, the precious
  • Any man who had 2 daughters or 2 sisters, and he educated and raised them until he dies or they get married, that will shield him from hell
  • The pray, The pray, and bequest one another to take good care of women

[His last words on his deathbed peace be upon him]

  • The most perfect of the believers in faith are the ones with the best morals, and the best of you are the best of you towards their wives.
  • The best of you is the best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wife
  • Fatimah (his daughter God bless her soul-) is a piece of me, what bothers her bothers me
  • Every time his daughter walk on him -Peace be upon him- he used to stand up, walk to her and kiss her between her eyes, the only time he didn’t, is the night he died, he couldn’t stand up due to his fever peace be upon him.
  • He visited a man at his home, the man’s boy came in, the man kissed him and placed him in his lap, then shortly his girl came in, he kissed her and placed her beside him, the prophet peace be upon him said: “You weren’t just between them”
  • A man asked the prophet -peace be upon him-: “who is the most worthy of the best of companionship?”

He said: “Your mother

He said: “Then who?”

He said: “Your mother

He said: “Then who?”

He said: “Your mother

He said: “Then who?”

He said: “Then your Father”

  • A man asked the Prophet -Peace be upon him- that he wants to seek heaven fighting with him, the prophet asked him: “Is your mother alive?”

He said: “Yes”

He Said -Peace be upon him-: “remain at her foot, for heaven is there”

  • Don’t harm me with Aisha (his wife God rest her soul)
  • He was asked: “who is the most beloved to you?”

He replied “Aisha (his wife God rest her soul)”

They said: “and from men?”

He replied: “Her father”

  • By God, God has not replaced me with anyone better than her:

She had faith in me when people disbelieved, believed me when people called me a liar,

sought me with her money when people deprived me, and gave me children from her to the

exclusion of other women, and she was, and she was, and she was

[Talking about his first wife Khadija God rest her soul over 10 years after her death]

  • After he was exiled from Makkah, and after 9 years of his people fighting him, he came back victorious leading 10,000 strong, and took over Makkah without a fight, when the noble and family heads asked him to be their guest, he refused, he didn’t even go to his home that he was forced to leave 9 years ago, he asked for a tent to be set up beside Khadija’s grave (his first wife God rest her soul).

The undisputed leader of Arabia (if you don’t want to believe that he was a prophet) spent the first

few nights after returning to his home, sleeping on the ground beside his wive’s grave.

  • When he died peace be upon him, he died in the arms of his wife Aisha -God rest her soul-,

she said: “The Messenger of God died with his noble head between my lips and my nick”

These are a few of the top of my head

Women Rights & Privileges

to keep things short, I won’t be mentioning the proof (Quranic verse or a Prophet’s teaching), for every point below

  1. Social Rights & Privileges
  2. Inheritance:Something that many women didn’t have until recently. Many like to lie and say that women inherit half of the men, which is a BIG FAT LIE, there are cases where females inherit less than their male counterparts, cases where they inherit equally, cases where they inherit more, and cases where they inherit and their male counterpart Does NOT
  3. The right to choose their husbands: No one can marry a woman without her approval and the approval of her guardian/caretaker/representative,
  4. Her rejection is absolute, with no reasons needed, while her guardian's rejection is conditional for the benefit of the woman.
  5. If the guardian abuses his responsibility, the woman has the right to request his removal from his duties and the judge would appoint another representative or himself
  6. The right to break the marriage: If any type of harm is caused to the woman, she can get the marriage broken regardless of the husband's will. All the major 5 schools of thought in Islam have agreed that one slap on the wife’s face can get the marriage broken, they only disagreed if that happens from the 1st offense or the second (after one and final warning from the judge)
  7. Nursery of children: Technically, this is not a woman’s right, it is a Child's right, the child has the right to be with his:~Mother, if not
  8. His grandmother (mother’s mother) if not
  9. His Aunt (mother’s sister) if not
  10. His sister (if capable) if not
  11. His Grandmother (father’s mother) if not
  12. His Aunt (Father’s sister) if not
  13. if no woman is available, then the Father The Child has the right to stay with his mother even if she was poor. The prophet's -peace be upon his- said to a man who was requesting to raise his son on the bases that he is rich and the mother is poor and he can provide a better life for their son: “Her breath with poverty, is better to HIM than to eat pure honey with you”
  14. You have to accept women as they are, don’t try to change them (the eternal “Yes Dear” rule)
  15. You can never pay back your mother ….EVER, it is God, His Prophet, then your Mother.
  16. Mothers have the right to grow old under the care of their children (when I say “right” it means illegal not to do so).
  17. It is their right not to be gazed at, touched, or rudely addressed.
  18. It is their right to be helped and aided by anyone in society.
  19. They have the right to have their own services and facilities without the interference/interaction of men.
  20. Women’s bodies can’t be exploited or used regardless of woman's consent.
  21. Financial Rights & Privleges
  22. Women have their own independent Financial Disclosure, and they had the right to own money, property, and businesses 1200 before women in the west had (the only reason women in the west were given the right to their own money, is to make it possible for them to work in factories, it was for the sake of business, not women).
  23. Women are not financially responsible for anyone, not their children, parents, or even themselves, it is their right to live free of charge for the entirety of their lives.
  24. If a woman has money of her own, then she is responsible ONLY for herself (not even her children), the only exception to this rule is the wife, who is the responsibility of her husband no matter how rich she is and/or how poor he is.
  25. The husband is responsible for her food, housing, necessary education, medication, clothing, and servants if she needs them (and her children)
  26. No one has the right to women’s money without their acceptance (not permission, Acceptance).
  27. The woman has the right to take money from her husband without telling him if he is cheap and not giving her her needs or her kids.
  28. If the husband is unable to provide his wife with her financial needs (the basic ones) she has the right to take a loan in his name, he is the one who pays back.
  29. Women should never be FORCED to earn their living, they work only if they choose to, the only situation that a woman can be forced to work is if her skills/services are needed by society.
  30. If the woman is forced to earn her living, she deserves higher pay than her male counterpart, since she is doing a role she isn’t supposed to (according to many modern-day scholars).
  31. Education & Knowledge Rights and Privileges
  32. Islam is the only Religion (to my knowledge) that considers knowledge the basis of faith, the first word that was revealed in the Quran, the first order was “Read”, the first verses were not about faith, but rather knowledge.
  33. Worship was mentioned in the Quran 275 times, Actions, 359 times (same as the number of days in the lunar year), and Knowledge, 811 times, more than worship & actions, combined.
  34. Knowledge is not just a right, it is mandatory, and that includes men and women. any necessary type of knowledge for your life is a MUST. (meaning, It is a sin not to acquire it, and the ruler could impose legal punishments if it was necessary)
  35. The Prophet had a special day every week dedicated to teaching only women.
  36. Women used to attend his speeches and teaching settings alongside men.
  37. Aisha (the prophet's wife -may God rest her soul-) was one of the most knowledgeable people among the companions of the prophet, after the prophet’s passing, she was one of the main schools that people used to travel to learn from here.
  38. She narrated 2,210 teachings of the prophet
  39. Al-Zuhari said: “if the knowledge of all women was compared to Aisha’s hers would be better”
  40. Ibn Katheer said: “There was not in all nations anyone equal to Aisha in her memorization and knowledge, her eloquence, and her mind.”
  41. Urwa bin Al-Zubayr said: “I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable in jurisprudence, medicine, or poetry than Aisha - may God be pleased with her.”
  42. Abu Omar bin Abd al-Barr said: “Aisha was the unique of her time in three fields: the knowledge of jurisprudence, the knowledge of medicine, and the knowledge of poetry.”
  43. Masruq said: “By God, I saw the greatest companions of Muhammad - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him - asking her about the basics.”
  44. Ata bin Abi Rabah said: “Aisha was the most knowledgeable of people and the best of opinions of people in general.”
  45. Abu Musa al-Ash’ari said: “There was not a time where the companions of the Messenger of God, -peace be upon him-, had an issue with one of his teachings and asked Aisha -may God be pleased with her-, that she had no knowledge off.”
  46. Aum Salamh (another of the prophet's wives -may God rest her soul-) not only she was knowledgeable, but she was famous for being a woman of opinion and advice, the Prophet himself -peace be upon him- used to consult her, like in the day of signing Al-Hudaibiah treaty.
  47. When the Quran was joined in one book for the first time after the Prophet’s passing -peace be upon him- that copy was kept in the possession of Aum Salamh (-God rest her soul-) until needed a few years later
  48. When the companions -God rest their souls- used to face a difficult situation where they couldn’t decide what to do, they used to consult the prophet’s wives -God rest their souls-.
  49. Political Rights and Privileges
  50. Voting:The first public election in Islamic history was when electing the 3rd Khalif after the prophet's passing -peace be upon him- when the election community couldn’t decide on Othman ibn Affan and Ali bin Aby Talib -God rest their souls- they decided to put it to a public vote, where men, women, and even learned children chose which of the 2 should be the new Khalif, Othman was selected, and Ali was considered his immediate successor. I don’t know any case in history where women and men voted together from the first time.
  51. Opinion and consultation: As mentioned above, women were consulted in all aspects of life, knowledge, religion, medicine, and politics.
  52. Providing political asylum: Yep, in Islam, anyone can provide protection to any wanted individual, and everyone, from the least Muslim to the head of state MUST respect that protection. This is a right preserved only for governments nowadays, while Muslim women had it 1400 years ago. The first woman to provide political asylum Was Zainab Bint Muhammad against her father ….. THE PROPHET -peace be upon him- when she provided protection to Abu Al-A’s Ibn Al-Rabee’a, her ex-husband. When his caravan clashed with a force of Muslims, he managed to escape but was stranded in the desert with no ride or rations, his only chance was the city of his enemy (the Prophet -peace be upon him-), so he snuck into the city at night and looked his ex-wife up (The prophet’s daughter) and asked for her help, and she did. During the dawn prayer, she yelled in the mosque that she has provided protection for Abu Al-A’s Ibn Al-Rabee’a, After the prayer, the Prophet -peace be upon him- approved her protection. and Abu Al-A’s Ibn Al-Rabee’a was free to leave.
  53. Sexual Rights and Prevligies
  54. While the west brags about the sexual freedom it grants to women, many don’t notice that it does not grant women the right to sex, but the right to seek it. acquiring sex and sexual (and emotional) satisfaction is not a woman’s right, but rather her responsibility. The laws will support her if someone is preventing her from seeking sex, but her success is her own problem, the laws won’t help her if her partner can’t or is not willing to satisfy her. This is where Islam is a league of its own. Sexual satisfaction is a woman’s right (and a man's). This means it is Illegal for a man to deprive his wife of sexual pleasure and satisfaction.
  55. When the prophet -peace be upon him- Know that a man was dedicating his life to worship and neglecting his wife he told him: “Your God has rights upon you, your body has rights upon you, your wife has rights upon you and your guest has rights upon you, so give each rightful his right”
  56. A woman approached the second Kalipha Omar Ibn Al-Khattab in his court and said that her husband fasts every day and prays all night, he replied “God bless your husband”, one of the attendees notified Omar that she is complaining and not praising her husband, he was neglecting her. Long story short, the husband was ordered to dedicate at least one night every 4 nights to his wife.
  57. Sexual frustration is a legal ground for women to break the marriage.
  58. Sweeden forced thousands of Women to go under surgical sterilization in the 1940s (or 1950s not sure),Meanwhile 1400 years ago, …. mmm… I am not sure how to translate the prophet’s word correctly -peace be upon him- but the meaning is something like: “You can’t pull out without your wife permission’s”. If she wants your juice, she gets your juice

Examples

  1. Women across Islamic history have been a factor in many political events. for Example: Aisha (the prophet's wife -God rest her soul-) was one of the major players in one of the first major political events in Islamic history, where she led 10,000 strong in the battle of Al-Jamal

  8. The prophet -peace be upon him- used to give her (as a medic) an equal share of battle spoils as a fighter.(Feminists take note, while you are fighting for equal pay, 1400 years ago, a woman field medic was paid the same as a male fighter!!)
  9. She used to take care of orphans, crippled, and mentally ill people in the City, she was rich and used to pay with her own money.
  10. She taught medicine to other women, including the Prophet’s wives -God rest their souls-

  23. Aum Hakeem Bint Al-Harith: A companion of the Prophet -peace be upon him-, She got married on the battlefield, On the day of her wedding her husband Khalid Ibn Al-Aas was killed by the Byzantines, she pulled the support of her wedding tent and charged into battle, she killed 7 soldiers. (talk about instant revenge).
  24. Later, The Khalifa Omar Ibn Al-Khattab (The Khalif - Head Of State-) was impressed with her bravery and asked for her hand, and she agreed.
  25. Aum Haram Bint Malhan: A companion of the Prophet -peace be upon him-, After embracing Islam, she participated in every battle there was. she even participated in the first naval battle in Islamic history.
  26. Khawla Bint Al-Azwar: ***(there are some doubts about her story)*** During a battle between the Muslims and Byzantines, Khawla and other women were captured, She did not surrender, and she incited the women who were with her in captivity to fight the guard imposed on them, they took off the poles of the tent in which they were, and fought the guard soldiers and returned to the Muslim camp. After she learned that her brother Dirar had also fallen into captivity, she rode a horse, covering her face, and fought fiercely, until Khaled bin Al-Walid (The General) himself marveled at this knight who was not afraid to break through the ranks of the enemies and fight with such ferocity, When she left the battle with her spear dripping with blood. Khaled asked her: "Who are you?" Believing that she was a man, When the men cavalry gathered around her learned that she is Khawla, and the news of her spread among the soldiers, their enthusiasm increased as their resolve became stronger. Khalid bin Al-Walid ordered to track down the Byzantine and liberate her brother Dirar. and indeed Dirar was liberated by a force led by Rafi bin Amira, and Khawla was one of his cavaliers.

  31. While women of the west had access to higher education 150–200 years ago, 1000 years before that, Muslim women were…. literally inventing Universities!!! The first university in human history (that issued degrees and certificates) is the University of Qayrawan, in modern-day Morroco, which was established by Fatima Al Fihrriya. This university (which is still in service) is 191 years older than the first university in Europe. Fatima also built 2 grand mosques and one of the oldest libraries in history. Fatimah Al-Fihrriya was not the only woman who established a university,

(BLLAAAHH… women …..BLLAAAHH …. oppressed …..BLLAAAHH ….backward ….)

Answer

Why are Abrahamic religions so sexist?

Based on what you call the Abrahamic religion sexist when women have been fighting the past 200 years for rights that the Abrahamic religion handed them over to women on a plate of gold 1450 years ago within a period of few years without them moving a finger?!!

There was nothing in human history or will, to pay women justice better than God’s rules.
