Serpentinite Gauntlets – Test Knitter Spotlight

The Serpentinite Gauntlets are a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure experience for sizing: the pattern includes charts for the sword and serpent motifs for both hands, plus two gusset sizes for increased sizing options.

I have a wrist circumference of 6” / 15 cm and an upper forearm circumference of 8” / 20 cm. I used fingering weight yarn at a gauge of 10 sts per 1” / 2.5 cm, with a finished glove circumference of 6” / 15 cm, and I didn't use a gusset. The glove is comfortably snug through my hand and wrist, and tight but not constrictive on my forearm.

When selecting test knitters for this design, I tried to get a wide sampling of wrist-to-forearm ratios to find out if my idea for mixing and matching gauge and gussets worked to create a size-inclusive pattern. The good news is, it seems to have worked! Check out these incredible pairs of Serpentinite Gauntlets for all the details. All photos, information and commentary are used with permission.

Heather (IG: @lunaseabloom)

  • Hand circumference: 8" / 20 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 7" / 17 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 11.5" / 29 cm
  • Yardage: 70g MC, 55g CC

Heather knit her gloves using the large gusset, at a gauge of 9 sts = 1" / 2.5 cm. She says the fit is very wearable – a bit snug getting them on, but once they're on her hands, they feel comfortable; like they're not going anywhere, but also not uncomfortably tight.

Zada (IG: @zadahathaway)

  • Hand circumference: 7" / 17 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 5.5" / 14 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 8" / 20 cm
  • Yardage: 158 yds / 144 m MC, 91 yds / 83 m CC

Zada knit their gloves without the gusset option, at a gauge of 9 sts x 11 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. They say the gloves are a perfect fit!

Amanda (IG: @wildlingscreations)

  • Hand circumference: 6.5" / 16.5 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6" / 15 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 8.5" / 22 cm
  • Yardage: 229 yds / 210 m MC, 92 yds / 82 m CC

Amanda knit her gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 9 sts x 9.75 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. She says it's a perfect fit – snug enough to wear on their own, but she can also wear them over a tight long-sleeved top.

MK (IG: @woolen_bones)

  • Hand circumference: 9.5" / 24 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6.5" / 16.5 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 11" / 28 cm
  • Yardage: 240 yds / 219 m MC, 113 yds / 103 m CC

MK knit their gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 9 sts x 8 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. They say it feels a bit tight getting their hand through the wrist of the serpent glove, but they fit comfortably once on.

Nevil (IG: @evil_makes)

  • Hand circumference: 9" / 23 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6.5" / 15.5 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 9.5" / 24 cm
  • Yardage: 61g MC, 20g CC

Nevil knit their gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 11 sts x 12 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. He says that the gloves are little too tight in the hand but fit well everywhere else. In retrospect, they think they could have gone a needle size up and skipped the gusset.

Taryn (IG: @thatbluemerm)

  • Hand circumference: 7" / 17.5 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6" / 15 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 11" / 28 cm
  • Yardage: 292 yds / 267 m MC, 106 yds / 97 m CC

Taryn knit their gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 8 sts x 9 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. They say the fit is great in terms of circumference and the gusset placement is good, but at 5 ft tall, they have short arms and their gloves therefore reach a bit past their elbows. Special thanks to Taryn's partner and their snake, Helia, for modelling!

Tiffany (IG: tiffknitthat)

  • Hand circumference: 8" / 20.5 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6.5" / 16.5 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 9.5" / 24 cm
  • Yardage: 263 yds / 240 m MC, 101 yds / 92 m CC

Tiff knit gloves for her daughter using the small gusset, at a gauge of 9 sts x 9.5 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. She says it's a perfect fit!

Lich (IG: knit.knight)

  • Hand circumference: 6.5" / 17 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6" / 15.5 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 10" / 26 cm
  • Yardage: 247 yds / 226 m MC, 109 yds / 100 m CC

Lich knit their gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 9.5 sts x 10 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. They say their gloves fit great – for future pairs, they might size down their needles through the wrist to make them slightly more fitted.

Kelsey (IG: AlchemistKnits)

  • Hand circumference: 8" / 20 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6.5" / 16.5 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 11" / 28 cm
  • Yardage: 200 yds / 183 m MC, 90 yds / 82 m CC

Kelsey knit her gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 8 sts x 7 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square. She used twisted ribbing instead of the folded picot hem for the forearm cuff. She says the small gusset worked out perfectly at her gauge.

Alex (IG: MartianCrafts)

  • Hand circumference: 7" / 18 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 6" / 15 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 8" / 21 cm
  • Yardage: 236 yds / 216 m MC, 102 yds / 94 m CC

Alex knit their gloves using the small gusset (omitting final 3 sets of decreases), at a gauge of 10 sts x 10 rounds = 1" / 2.5 cm square for the hand and 11 sts x 10.5 rounds = 1" for the arm. They say their gloves fit really nicely, especially with sizing up the needles for the hand portion of the glove.

Willow (IG: @willow.mehala)

  • Hand circumference: 9" / 23 cm
  • Wrist circumference: 7" / 17.5 cm
  • Forearm circumference: 12" / 30.5 cm
  • Yardage: 80g MC, 20g CC

Willow knit her gloves using the small gusset, at a gauge of 8.5 sts = 1" / 2.5 cm. She says the fit is good!
