A MOTHER'S LOVE ON MOTHER'S DAY

Why do we celebrate Mother's Day? What is it about a Mother's Love?

Mother's Day has ancient roots, originating from ancient Greek and Roman festivals honoring mother goddesses. In the United States, the modern Mother's Day was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1870 as a day dedicated to peace and motherhood. However, it was Anna Jarvis who campaigned for an official holiday to honor mothers in the early 20th century. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, a day to express gratitude and love for mothers and mother figures.

Spending time with mom is so important. It's the day I miss my mom even more because she was thrilled to spend this day with me and her grandchildren. I feel her love shines through when I see my own children with the love of their children. Family is everything and should be cherished. It can be gone in an instant.

Here are some fun activities you can do with mom on Mother's Day:

  1. Picnic in the Park: Pack a delicious picnic and head to a nearby park for a relaxing outdoor meal together.
  2. Spa Day at Home: Set up a spa day at home with homemade facials, foot soaks, and massages. Play soothing music and create a calming atmosphere.
  3. Cooking/Baking Together: Choose a recipe you both love and spend the day cooking or baking together. It's a great way to bond and create delicious treats.
  4. Arts and Crafts: Get creative with arts and crafts. You can make personalized cards, paint pottery, or create a scrapbook of memories together.
  5. Nature Walk: Take a nature walk or hike in a scenic area. Enjoy the beauty of nature and have meaningful conversations along the way.
  6. Movie Marathon: Have a movie marathon with mom's favorite films or choose a theme and watch movies related to it. Don't forget the popcorn!
  7. Gardening: If mom enjoys gardening, spend the day planting flowers or vegetables together. It's a therapeutic and rewarding activity.
  8. DIY Gifts: Create handmade gifts for mom, such as a photo album, a decorated mug, or a personalized piece of jewelry.
  9. Virtual Activities: If you can't be together in person, consider virtual activities like cooking the same recipe simultaneously over video call, playing online games, or watching a movie together virtually.
  10. Family Game Night: Organize a family game night with mom's favorite board games or card games. It's a fun way to bond and create lasting memories.

These activities can be tailored to suit your mom's interests and preferences for a memorable Mother's Day celebration!

Here are some fun activities for children to get ready for Mother's Day in class:

  1. Handmade Cards: Provide art supplies like colored paper, markers, stickers, and glitter for students to create personalized Mother's Day cards for their moms or mother figures.
  2. Flower Pot Painting: Set up a painting station with small flower pots and non-toxic paint. Kids can decorate the pots with colorful designs or write messages for their moms.
  3. Poetry Corner: Encourage students to write poems or short messages expressing their love and appreciation for their moms. They can then share their poems with the class or in a special Mother's Day assembly.
  4. Cooking or Baking: Plan a simple cooking or baking activity where children can make treats like cookies, cupcakes, or sandwiches to share with their moms. This can also tie into a lesson on following recipes or measuring ingredients.
  5. Storytelling Circle: Have a storytelling session where students can share stories about special memories with their moms or create imaginary stories about superheroes moms.
  6. Planting Flowers: If possible, arrange for a small gardening activity where children can plant flowers or herbs in pots. This not only teaches them about gardening but also gives them something meaningful to give their moms.
  7. Photo Booth: Set up a photo booth with props like hats, glasses, and mustaches. Kids can take fun pictures with their friends to create a photo collage or card for their moms.
  8. Song or Dance Performance: Practice a simple song or dance routine related to Mother's Day that kids can perform for their moms during a class presentation or assembly.

These activities not only engage children creatively but also help them show appreciation and love for their moms in a meaningful way. Check out my resource with reading comprehension, writing activities (including poetry), crafts, etc. to prepare your class for Mother's Day.
