MARCH FUN IS HERE!!

I don't know about you but I am looking forward to winter ending. I'm certainly tired of wearing heavy coats, snow and early sunsets. I think of March as hope for spring and finally summer. Sitting outside later in the day, just wearing a light jacket -- this is only a few weeks away.

March is filled with fun holidays and special observances that kids can enjoy! Here are some ideas:

Major Holidays & Celebrations

  • St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) – Celebrate with green-themed activities, shamrock crafts, and fun facts about Irish culture.
  • Easter (Varies, sometimes in March) – If Easter falls in March, kids can enjoy egg hunts, bunny crafts, and learning about springtime traditions.

Fun & Educational Awareness Days

  • Dr. Seuss’s Birthday / Read Across America Day (March 2) – A great day to promote reading with Dr. Seuss books and literacy activities.
  • International Women’s Day (March 8) – Share stories of inspiring women in history and encourage kids to dream big.
  • Pi Day (March 14) – A fun way to introduce math concepts, play number games, and even enjoy a slice of pie!
  • World Wildlife Day (March 3) – Teach kids about different animals and the importance of conservation.
  • First Day of Spring (March 19, 2024) – Welcome the new season with nature walks, planting activities, or learning about how the weather changes.

Silly & Fun Days

  • National Cereal Day (March 7) – A fun excuse for a cereal-themed breakfast or snack.
  • National Puppy Day (March 23) – A perfect day to learn about pet care and share cute puppy pictures.
  • Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (March 26) – Let kids get creative and invent their own special holiday!

March is also Women's History Month. Children learn about many influential women during the month aligned within their curriculum. It would be fun to interview a woman who is special to you and do a report or Powerpoint for otherrs.

Women’s History Month (March) is a great opportunity to teach kids about the contributions of women throughout history and inspire them to dream big!

Here are some engaging ways to introduce children to the importance of this month:

1. Explain Why We Celebrate Women's History Month

  • Teach kids that for a long time, women were not given the same rights as men, such as voting, going to school, or working in certain jobs.
  • Explain that Women's History Month is a time to honor women who made a difference in science, art, sports, politics, and more.

2. Introduce Famous Women in History

  • Rosa Parks – Civil Rights leader who stood up for equality.
  • Amelia Earhart – First female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Marie Curie – Scientist who won two Nobel Prizes for her work in chemistry and physics.
  • Frida Kahlo – Mexican artist known for her unique paintings.
  • Malala Yousafzai – Fought for girls’ education and became the youngest Nobel Prize winner.
  • Katherine Johnson – NASA mathematician who helped send astronauts to space.

3. Fun Activities to Celebrate

  • Read Books About Inspiring Women – Choose age-appropriate books featuring strong female characters or real-life heroines.
  • Create a "Wall of Women" – Have kids draw or write about an inspiring woman they admire.
  • Role-Playing – Let kids dress up or act out famous moments in women’s history.
  • STEM Activities – Teach kids about women in science by trying experiments inspired by famous female scientists.
  • Art Projects – Encourage kids to draw portraits of influential women or create posters celebrating their achievements.

4. Discuss Modern-Day Role Models

  • Talk about women today who are making a difference, like astronauts, athletes, doctors, and leaders.
  • Encourage kids to think about what they want to achieve and how they can make a difference, just like the women they’ve learned about.

And don't forget the best part about March is often the first day of spring, especially after a long winter.

After a long, cold winter, March brings a sense of renewal, energy, and excitement! Here’s why so many people—especially kids—look forward to this month:

1. Warmer Weather & More Sunshine ☀️

  • Days get longer, and we finally see more sunlight, which helps boost mood and energy.
  • Temperatures start to warm up, so we can spend more time outside without bundling up in heavy coats.

2. Signs of New Life 🌱

  • Flowers start blooming, trees get greener, and we see the first signs of spring.
  • Animals that hibernate (like bears) start waking up, and birds return from migration.
  • Spring smells fresh—there’s something magical about the scent of rain and blooming flowers.

3. Fun Holidays & Celebrations 🎉

  • St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) brings fun traditions, leprechaun stories, and lots of green!
  • Read Across America Day (March 2) encourages kids to celebrate books and literacy.
  • Women’s History Month teaches us about amazing women who changed the world.
  • Easter & Spring Festivals (sometimes in March) bring egg hunts, bunnies, and fun crafts.

4. Outdoor Activities Return! 🌳

  • Kids can play outside more—running, biking, and enjoying parks.
  • Families and schools start gardening, planting flowers, and watching plants grow.
  • Spring sports like soccer, baseball, and track begin, giving everyone something to cheer for!

5. A Fresh Start 🦋

  • Spring is a symbol of new beginnings, making it a great time for goal-setting and trying new things.
  • The world feels more alive, and people tend to feel happier and more motivated.

March is like a reset button, bringing hope, warmth, and excitement after a long, sleepy winter! 🌸✨
