WHAT IS ELECTION DAY ALL ABOUT?

Election Day is an important day in the United States, and it's a concept that students can easily understand. Here's an explanation suitable for students:

Election Day is the day when people in the United States go to vote to choose their leaders. It's like picking a captain for your soccer team or a class president for your school, but on a much bigger scale.

Here are some key points to help students understand Election Day:

1. Choosing Leaders: Imagine your town, state, or the whole country as a big team, and this team needs someone to make important decisions. On Election Day, everyone who is eligible (old enough) gets to decide who they think would be the best person to lead and make important choices for the team.

2. Voting: Voting is like raising your hand to choose your favorite leader. People go to a special place called a polling station to cast their votes. They mark their choices on a ballot, which is like a special piece of paper. It's a secret vote, so nobody knows who you voted for.

3. Candidates: Before Election Day, different people who want to become leaders, like the president, mayor, or governor, talk to the team and tell them what they would do if they were chosen. These people are called candidates, and they have different ideas and plans for the team.

4. Democracy: The United States is a democracy, which means that the people have the power to choose their leaders. On Election Day, everyone's vote is important, and the person with the most votes becomes the leader.

5. Importance: Election Day is essential because it helps to make sure that the leaders are chosen by the people and that they work for the best interests of the team. It's a way for everyone's voice to be heard and for the team to make decisions together.

6. National Holiday: In the United States, Election Day is usually held on the first Tuesday of November. Many schools and workplaces are closed, so people have time to go and vote.

7. Rights and Responsibilities: As you grow older, you'll have the opportunity to vote and have a say in choosing your leaders. It's both a right and a responsibility as a citizen of the country.

A great way to truly explain Election Day to kids is by reading Class President by Johanna Hurwitz. Check it out plus the Class President Reading Lessons. And while you are planning check out our November Holiday Interdisciplinary Unit which includes Election Day, Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving. Check out separate units on Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving too!!

Overall, Election Day is a special day when everyone gets a chance to have a say in how their community, state, and country are run by choosing the leaders they think will do the best job. It's an important part of being a citizen and participating in the democratic process.
