My 5 step goal-setting system for the new year

Hey there!

I don’t know about you, but when the holidays arrive I get excited about making the new year THE year to accomplish all the goals I have ever imagined but never put them into action. But let’s be real, that’s not the way things work. Things change and priorities too. Life happens and that’s OK.

However, we should set some goals to help us keep focus on where we want to get to. We all want something, just think about it. So, after reflecting on why my goal settings never worked before, I created a new plan for me that might give you some ideas too. Shall we?

* Always remember that goals can be adapted as we go.

So don’t get anxious about it, because that will only work against you and your needs. OK? *

Step 1

Let’s start by sketching a list of your priorities as they are shown on your mind. Take your time, don’t rush and after a while read them and check if they are still a viable priority for your brand new year.

For me, I started to list them at the end of last year, as I was remembering and waited for the first week of the week to filter them.

Step 2

In your list, identify the areas of your life (for example, family, health, career, organization, finances, hobbies… ) described on the list.

In my case, I divided in 5 areas: finances, health, organization, personal and professional.

Step 3

After that, re-read your list and make sure if it is realistic. Then identify the projects from the habits. Let me explain: a project is something that you complete once and it’s done. While a habit is something that is never done, it’s maintenance.

Here are the changes for me: my priority was to build an emergency fund, so I decided to let go of the trip for vacation for now. By the way, building a fund is a project because it is set and done, while keeping the closet organized is a habit, something that I have to maintain.

Step 4

Now that you have your goals set, you should divide them into small tasks according to your reality and set a deadline, to help you get them done.

Some examples: Closet organized: 1) store washed/ironed clothes on the same day. 2) After using, store/put to wash immediately. | Build an emergency fund: Until December!!! 1) Cut down on impulse buys. 2) Start cooking. 3) No spending weeks.

Step 5

After everything is done, organize your goals and small tasks into your online calendar of choice (I like the Apple Calendar that syncs with all my devices) and or your planner. Make sure to be reminded of each step of the way and revise them from time to time. For goals that are habits, track them the way you see fit. I haven’t found anything that really helps me yet. Do you have any good ideas?

 * Keep in mind that if one day you get off course, it’s not the end of it.

You can always start again and adapt as needed. *

Hope it’ll help us to get everything we want for the new year!

With love,

Fabiana
