August has always felt like a season in between.
Summer isn’t quite finished, but you can feel life beginning to shift. The calendar starts filling up again. School is starting, activities are picking back up, and routines that felt a little looser during summer suddenly need our attention again.
On the farm, the fields are still green and growing. The days are still warm. The garden is giving us tomatoes faster than we can use them, and fresh sweet corn still tastes like summer should.
And yet, you know another busy season is coming.
We Don’t Have to Rush It
I think sometimes we get so focused on preparing for what’s next that we forget to enjoy what’s still right in front of us.
We start thinking about fall schedules, harvest, school, meal planning, getting organized, and everything we need to have ready.
There’s nothing wrong with preparing. In fact, doing a little ahead can make those busy days much easier.
But we don’t have to mentally leave summer before summer has actually left us.
There are still late sunsets to enjoy.
Still evenings when you can sit outside a little longer.
Still those August suppers when sliced garden-fresh tomatoes and buttery sweet corn are the whole meal—and honestly, what more do you need? Anyone else? 🤍
Still flowers blooming, fields growing, and warm evenings when daylight seems to hang on just a little longer.
Those ordinary things are worth noticing.
Finding Peace in the Busy
I’ve learned over the years that waiting for life to become completely calm before enjoying it usually means waiting a very long time—especially in a farm family.
There will always be something.
Another meal to make. Another load of laundry. Another appointment. Another field that needs attention. Another project waiting for tomorrow.
Peace doesn’t necessarily come when everything is finished.
Sometimes it comes from deciding that, for a few minutes, what isn’t finished can wait.
Pour the coffee and sit on the porch.
Slice the tomatoes that came out of the garden that afternoon.
Have supper outside.
Watch the sunset over the fields.
Take the long way home down a country road.
Enjoy the season you’re actually living in instead of always preparing for the next one.
A Little Preparation Can Still Help
Of course, part of enjoying these last weeks of summer is knowing that September doesn’t have to arrive like a freight train.
I’m a big believer in doing small things now that make busy days easier later—putting a few meals in the freezer, having simple supper ideas ready, keeping the pantry stocked, or making a realistic plan for the week.
Not because life needs to be perfectly organized.
Because simplifying the things we can simplify leaves a little more room for the things we actually want to enjoy.

Soak Up a Little More Summer
Soon enough, the seasons will change.
The fields will turn. Harvest will come. The evenings will get shorter, the air will get cooler, and summer will quietly give way to fall.
But we aren’t there quite yet.
So maybe August doesn’t need to be rushed.
Enjoy the garden-fresh tomatoes and sweet corn. Notice the late sunsets and growing fields. Sit outside for another evening. Let summer linger just a little longer.
There’s plenty of busy ahead.
For now, soak up a little more summer while it’s still here. 🤍
