Farmhouse Cheesy Baked Spaghetti: An Old-School Family Favorite

This one takes me back. 🤍

I used to make something similar when our kids were young—a simple baked spaghetti layered with sauce and American cheese slices. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. Just one of those easy, comforting suppers that everyone would eat. And when you’re feeding a family, that counts for a whole lot.

There are some recipes that don’t need fancy ingredients or a long list of steps to be good. Sometimes the meals we remember most are the ones that were inexpensive, filling, easy to get on the table, and familiar enough that nobody complained when you served them.

This baked spaghetti is exactly that kind of recipe.

It’s warm, cheesy, saucy, and made with basic ingredients you can find at just about any grocery store. The American cheese slices melt right into the middle of the spaghetti and give it that creamy, old-fashioned casserole texture that reminds me of the kinds of meals so many of us grew up eating.

Why I Still Love Recipes Like This

I enjoy trying new recipes, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the simple meals we made when our girls were growing up.

Back then, supper didn’t need to be impressive. It needed to feed everybody, fit the grocery budget, and preferably be something the kids would actually eat.

Baked spaghetti checked all those boxes.

It’s also one of those recipes you can easily adjust to what you have on hand. More sauce? Go ahead. Extra cheese? Absolutely. Feeding a bigger crowd? Double it and use two pans.

That kind of flexibility is exactly why these old-school family recipes have stuck around for generations.

Farmhouse Cheesy Baked Spaghetti

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 jar spaghetti sauce, about 24 ounces
  • 8–10 slices American cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, optional
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the spaghetti until just al dente according to the package directions. Drain well.
  3. Toss the cooked spaghetti with about half of the spaghetti sauce, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  4. Spread half of the spaghetti mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Lay the American cheese slices across the spaghetti, covering as much of the surface as possible.
  6. Add the remaining spaghetti over the cheese layer.
  7. Spoon the remaining spaghetti sauce over the top.
  8. Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella if you’re using it.
  9. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for about 25 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes, or until everything is hot and bubbly.

Let it sit for about 5 minutes before serving.

Farm Wife Tip 🤍

The American cheese in the middle is what gives this baked spaghetti its creamy, old-fashioned texture. You don’t need ricotta, cottage cheese, cream cheese, or a complicated cheese mixture.

That’s part of what makes this recipe so easy.

And if your family loves things extra cheesy, there’s certainly nothing wrong with adding another slice or two.

Make It Ahead

This is a handy supper to put together earlier in the day.

Prepare the casserole, cover it tightly, and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake it. Because it will be starting cold, you may need to add about 10 extra minutes to the covered baking time.

It’s especially nice for busy afternoons when you know supper time is going to sneak up on you.

What to Serve With Baked Spaghetti

You really don’t need much alongside it.

A simple salad, green beans, broccoli, or garlic bread makes an easy complete meal. If I were trying to stretch supper for a larger family, I’d definitely add bread and a vegetable on the side.

And leftovers? Even better the next day.

An Easy Budget-Friendly Supper

Recipes like this are also a good reminder that family meals don’t have to be expensive.

Pasta has always been one of those dependable pantry ingredients that can stretch a meal. Pair it with sauce and a little cheese, and you’ve got a warm casserole that can feed several people without needing a long grocery list.

Keeping a few meals like this in your rotation can make those busy weeks—and those grocery budgets—a little easier to manage.

Bringing the Old Favorites Back

Sometimes we spend so much time looking for the next new recipe that we forget about the ones we used to make all the time.

And honestly, some of those old-school recipes deserve another turn around the supper table.

This cheesy baked spaghetti is one of them.

Simple ingredients. Easy preparation. Family-friendly comfort food.

That was enough then, and some nights, it’s exactly enough now too. 🤍

Enjoy!
