Farmhouse Copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Makes: 10–12 biscuits

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Baking time: 12–15 minutes

Oven temperature: 425°F

Ingredients

● 2 cups all-purpose flour

● 1 tablespoon baking powder

● 1 teaspoon garlic powder

● ½ teaspoon salt

● ½ cup cold butter, cut into small cubes

● 1½ cups freshly shredded sharp cheddar cheese

● 1 cup cold buttermilk

Garlic Butter Topping

● 3 tablespoons butter, melted

● ½ teaspoon garlic powder

● ½ teaspoon dried parsley

● Small pinch of salt

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, garlic powder and salt.

3. Add the cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter, fork or your fingertips to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese.

5. Pour in the cold buttermilk. Gently stir just until the ingredients come together and form a soft, slightly sticky dough. Avoid overmixing.

6. Drop generous spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each biscuit.

7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the biscuits are cooked through and lightly golden around the edges.

8. While the biscuits bake, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, dried parsley and a small pinch of salt.

9. Brush the garlic butter generously over the biscuits as soon as they come out of the oven. Serve warm.

Don’t Have Buttermilk?

You can make a quick substitute with regular milk and either lemon juice or white vinegar.

Pour 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar into a measuring cup. Add enough milk to equal 1 cup. Stir and let it rest for about 5 minutes before adding it to the biscuit dough.

Tips for the Best Cheddar Biscuits

Keep the ingredients cold. Cold butter and cold buttermilk help create tender, fluffy biscuits.

Shred your own cheese. Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than packaged shredded cheese, which is often coated to prevent clumping.

Don’t overmix the dough. Stir only until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing can make the biscuits dense or tough.

Use sharp cheddar. Sharp cheddar provides plenty of flavor, but mild or medium cheddar will also work.

Brush them while they’re hot. The warm biscuits absorb the garlic butter and become even more flavorful.

What to Serve With Cheddar Bay Biscuits

These biscuits are a wonderful addition to:

● Homemade vegetable or potato soup

● Chili or beef stew

● Creamy chicken dishes

● Spaghetti or baked pasta

● Shrimp or fish dinners

● Roast chicken

● Sunday pot roast

● A large farmhouse salad

They can also turn a simple supper of soup and leftovers into a meal that feels a little more special.

Storing and Reheating

Keep leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or refrigerate them for up to four days.

To reheat, wrap a biscuit loosely in a damp paper towel and microwave it for about 15 seconds. You can also warm the biscuits in a 300°F oven for 5–8 minutes.

Can You Freeze Them?

Yes! Let the baked biscuits cool completely, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to three months.

Thaw at room temperature or warm them directly from frozen in a 325°F oven. Brush them with a little extra garlic butter before serving, and they’ll taste freshly baked again.

A Simple Addition to a Farmhouse Supper

A basket of warm biscuits can make even the simplest supper feel cozy and complete. These Farmhouse Copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits require very little preparation, and most of the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen.

Make a batch for your next soup night or family supper—but you might want to double the recipe. They tend to disappear quickly!
