The Things That Keep Us Grounded

Some weeks fly by so quickly that Friday arrives before I’m quite sure where Monday went.

Farm life can be like that.

There’s always something that needs done. Fields and gardens don’t pay much attention to the calendar. Meals still need made, laundry keeps coming, bills need paid, farm books need caught up, family needs us, and there always seems to be one more thing waiting for tomorrow.

But mixed right into all that busy are some of the greatest blessings of this life.

Faith. Family. Farm.

Three simple words that represent so much of what keeps us grounded.

A Little Faith Along the Way 🤍

Farm life has a way of reminding us that we aren’t in control of everything.

We can prepare the ground, plant the seed, care for the crop and make the best decisions we know how to make—but there are plenty of things we simply can’t control.

Weather changes. Equipment breaks. Plans get rearranged.

Life works much the same way.

For me, faith is part of what keeps me grounded through all of it. It’s trusting that I don’t have to have every answer today. Sometimes it’s simply getting up in the morning, doing what needs done, being grateful for what’s in front of me and trusting tomorrow will bring what it brings.

Whatever keeps you grounded when life feels especially busy, I think we all need something that reminds us to look beyond the to-do list once in a while.

Family Around the Table

If you’ve spent much time around Farm Wife Favorites, you already know how much I love the kitchen table.

Not because the table itself is anything special.

It’s what happens around it.

Meals are shared. Stories are told. Plans are made. Problems are talked through. Kids grow up around it, and before you know it, grandchildren are pulling up chairs too.

The meals don’t have to be fancy.

Sometimes supper is something that simmered all afternoon. Sometimes it’s a casserole pulled from the freezer. Sometimes it’s sandwiches, leftovers, or fresh tomatoes and sweet corn because August gave us supper straight from the garden.

What matters most is who is gathered there.

Those ordinary meals have a way of becoming some of our sweetest memories.

A Life Rooted in the Farm

Farm life certainly isn’t always the peaceful picture people imagine.

There are long days, unpredictable seasons, early mornings, late nights and plenty of dirt tracked through the house. There are bills, paperwork, farm books and decisions that have to be made when you’d much rather be doing just about anything else.

But it is also a beautiful way to live.

Watching a field turn green after planting.

Seeing crops grow through the summer.

A barn roof glowing in the early morning sunshine.

Fresh flowers growing.

The hum of equipment in the distance.

Knowing generations before you worked the same land—and hoping there will be generations after you who love it too.

Those things have a value that can’t really be measured in dollars.

Finding the Blessing in an Ordinary Friday

Maybe that’s what I’m thinking about most this Friday morning.

We spend so much time waiting for the big moments that it can be easy to overlook the ordinary ones.

A fresh cup of coffee.

Flowers blooming beside the barn.

A family member walking through the kitchen door.

Food growing in the garden or at the Amish neighbors.

Work that gives the day purpose.

Another sunrise.

Another Friday.

Another chance to love our people, appreciate what we have and tend to the life right in front of us.

That’s a pretty good kind of wealth.

From My Kitchen Table to Yours 🤍

Whatever this week has looked like for you, I hope you can find a few quiet blessings tucked into your ordinary today.

Maybe life isn’t perfectly organized.

Maybe supper won’t be fancy.

Maybe the bills are sitting beside you, the farm books still need finished, and the to-do list will have a few things left on it when the sun goes down.

That’s real life.

Hold close to your faith, whatever that looks like for you. Make time for your family. Be thankful for the work, home, land, garden—or simply the life—you’ve been given to care for.

The simple things really do become the big things.

Here’s to Faith, Family & Farm—and a beautiful Friday from my kitchen table to yours. 🤍
