"Larion felt the winds of hope ruffle his hair once more, while the king was giddy at the prospect of a new adventure. They climbed into a small carriage bedecked with silver fish scales and set off for the plateau towering above the northern edge of the island. All the while, Vilibald told him of their destination, the capital city’s sky harbor, the Orca Aerodrome, above which floated the regal Shishumara, a graceful airship sixty-four elephants long. As it came into sight, Larion was enthralled by the magnificent airship, its lace of golden constellations against a vast, midnight blue canvas. Beneath its belly hung a splendid gondola, within which lay a host of luxurious living quarters, and beneath the gondola were three grappling hook turrets.

“The tree cannot be approached with any common vessel,” the fisherking continued as he stepped on deck, “for beneath it there is a raging whirlpool which cannot be traversed, and in the center of that grows a mesh of perfidious, choking kelpweed which has claimed already a flotilla’s worth of ships to sate the unknown depths. So we shall strike from the sky, latch our grappling hooks to its outstretched branches, and with a winch carefully lower you down with the gift.”

“I am to bring a gift?” Larion wondered aloud.

“I am afraid it is unavoidable, a necessary bribe,” Vilibald answered. “The celestial manatees are dignified, sensitive beings who do not generally suffer commonplace mortals to disturb them. It is known, however, that they are unable to resist the temptation of dugong mint. And as fortune would have it, I happen to possess a sizeable underwater farm of the stuff; it is the primary ingredient of my very own sea snuff, Prima Vilibaldex, a product of inimitable aroma known all the lands and seas over! So I shall send you down on the pulley with a hefty bale of it, which should drastically increase the chances that one of them will be willing to treat with you.”

As they talked, the peerless Shishumara glided gracefully toward the open sea, and Larion stared with innocent wonder at sun-steeped Gaffhook Crag below, and at the hundred islands in the shape of a starfish that ringed it in."
