Aurifil Artisan - February’s challenge that I didn’t finish

In February we were tasked with using a thread weight that we have used the least. I agonised over this challenge because I just couldn’t decide what to do! In the end, I sat with my wonderful box of threads we are sent when we are accepted as artisans and my eyes were drawn to the invisible thread. What could I use this for?

Before I discovered quilting I used to make keepsake bears and I used to use invisible thread a lot. I decided I wanted to try making a 3D lifelike fabric sculpture of an animal. The problem was that I finally decided this in the middle of February and it took a lot longer than I expected. I love giraffes and thought it would be easier to do as the limbs and neck are so long, so there wouldn’t be as many tight spaces to sew! I started with a wire skeleton, which I then wrapped in quilt wadding and shaped with needle and thread and needle felting tools. I then wrapped it in fabric and sewed it together with the invisible thread, each limb had to be created separately and I took care to hide the raw edges.

At this point I forgot my boys had a half term holiday and I lost a lot of sewing time! I rushed to add the distinctive brown patches, I used applique glue and will eventually sew them all down with the invisible thread. At this point though I sadly ran out of time to finish and submit this project at the deadline. I still love him and will finish him at some point…..it was just my bad time keeping and making it all up as I go along that meant I ran out of time!
