When is the last time you picked up a book that wasn't solely for the purpose of entertainment?
I read many books as a child, but as I became an adult, I kicked my reading habit and picked up this writing habit. And while I'm sure your thinking, "writing is better than reading, right?' I quickly learned that reading more can ACTUALLY help you write.
How, you many ask? Let me tell you. I only have a few reasons, but that is probably all the time you have to read this especially while living this busy life.
Here are two simple reasons why you should start back reading today.
1. It will help you get your thoughts together.
I don't know how many times I've began writing and by the time I finished I had written over ten different subjects. This could be due to having an overactive imagination, but I didn't feel bad about it.
Imagine reading a lovely romance novel about a couple that decides to take a vacation together. You're prepped and ready to read about this amazing trip only to find that in the next few chapters, you learn about a cat that decides to go to his mothers house. Spoiler alert! The cat never gets there.
How would you feel?
Me, I would be confused! And probably a little bit furious..
Learning to read more within the genre's I wrote, allowed me to see how others blended their subjects and communication styles to create the masterpieces that they were. It also allowed me to structure my writing in a way that my readers would understand.
2. It will give you different perspectives.
I am not particularly as social as I could be. So I spend a good amount of my time in the company of a preschooler, a laptop, and PBS kids. This has made me more introverted and less likely to talk to the person in front of me at Trader Joes. Having less time spent with actual adults having actual adult conversations can have your conversations sound a little like this, "When your feeling mad and want to roar...count to four."
"Yes, yes, daughter, we can sing Daniel Tiger's song again."
Reading will give you those needed opportunities to align your ideas and thoughts with people of like mindedness. People you've never met and those you probably won't chatter with at your local grocery store.
So, while writing is wonderful for my peace of mind, reading can also bring me to a world of understanding that I wasn't even aware I needed. And while living in this day and age, being able to understand the complexities of people, ideas, and situations can be the difference in thinking closed minded or open.
Our children are growing up in a complex society that is full of ideas. As parents and caregivers, we are responsible for providing the loving environment that will help them grow and flourish.
