You wake up and immediately feel that sinking feeling.
Before your feet even hit the floor, your mind is already racing:
“I’m behind.”
“I can’t handle today.”
“Nothing I do is enough.”
Negative thoughts don’t just visit — they hijack your peace.
They create stories that feel true, even when they’re not.
But here’s the good news:
You can learn to quiet your inner critic.
You can take back control.
Let’s talk about how to stop negative thoughts from spiraling and start choosing better ones.
1. Become Aware of Your Thought Patterns
The first step to changing your thoughts is noticing them.
Most of us are on autopilot. We believe every thought we think. But your thoughts are not facts — they’re often just echoes of old fear, pain, or conditioning.
Next time a negative thought appears, pause and ask:
- Is this true?
- Where did this belief come from?
- Would I speak to someone I love the way I speak to myself?
Awareness is power.
2. Practice Thought Reframing
Reframing doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine.
It means choosing a more helpful version of the story.
Instead of:
“I failed again.”
Try:
“I didn’t get it right this time, but I’m learning.”
Instead of:
“I’ll never get better.”
Try:
“This is hard, but healing isn’t linear — and I’m showing up.”
You’re not ignoring your feelings — you’re re-training your brain.
3. Create a Grounding Routine
When your mind feels out of control, your body can help bring you back to the present.
Here are a few simple practices:
- Deep breathing: Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6
- Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear...
- Go for a walk — without your phone
- Keep a “truth” list nearby: short affirmations that remind you of who you are when you forget
The goal isn’t to never have negative thoughts — it’s to interrupt the spiral before it takes over.
