I’ve been sitting with my coffee this morning (gold espresso with caramel cream, of course, because what’s life without a little sweetness?). and thinking about something that’s been burning in my heart for a long time now. It’s this simple, beautiful truth: God has a personality.
I know, I know, maybe that sounds a bit strange. But hear me out.
Many of us grow up hearing about God, singing songs about Him, memorizing scriptures, attending church, and nodding along when people talk about Him. And yet... we don’t really know Him.
Not the way we know a best friend or a parent or someone we love deeply. We might believe in Him. We might even serve Him faithfully. But have we taken the time to learn what makes His heart beat?
For me, that realization hit hard years ago, like a whisper in my spirit: “You talk about Me, but do you know Me?”
Oof. That one landed.
That was the start of a journey that honestly changed everything. Because when you get to know God's character, when you start to really see Him, you stop fearing Him as this distant, angry deity. And you begin to fall in love with Him as a Father, a protector, a healer, a provider… a Person who deeply, intimately cares about you.
Let me tell you, I used to think God was mostly watching to catch me messing up. You know, sitting up in heaven with a cosmic clipboard, going, “Hmm, Rox is at it again. Add that to the list.” That was the image I had, whether I admitted it or not.
But that’s not who He is.
He’s merciful. You know what that means? It means He doesn’t give us what we deserve. Instead of punishment, He gives us forgiveness.
Instead of silence, He gives us grace.
And that grace? It’s not something we earn. It’s a gift. Freely given. (And goodness, don’t we all need a little grace?)
He’s also compassionate. Like, the kind of compassion where He feels it when you’re hurting. Ever cry in your car and think no one sees? He does. And He’s not sitting there judging your tears, He’s moved by them.
There was a time I felt like I was drowning emotionally. Life was just… heavy. You know that feeling where everything is technically “fine,” but inside you’re breaking a little more each day?
That’s when I discovered something wild: God is patient. He didn’t rush me. He didn’t throw out a “get over it” card. He waited with me. He held space for me to heal. And that kind of patience melts the walls around your heart.
Another thing that blew me away? God is unchanging.
In a world that changes every five minutes, He stays the same. He’s not moody. He doesn’t love you more when you’re doing well and less when you’re struggling or miss the mark. He’s steady. Safe. Solid. And that kind of constancy is like an anchor in life’s chaos.
Now, let’s talk about something we often skip over: God is jealous. Yeah, that word has a lot of baggage, doesn’t it? But His jealousy isn’t petty; it’s pure. He wants our hearts fully, not because He’s insecure, but because He knows no one else can love and protect and guide us like He can.
It’s like a parent saying, “Please don’t run into the arms of something that will hurt you. Stay close to Me. I’ve got you.”
And my favourite? God is our Father; He’s our Dad, our Papa.
Not in the distant, stern, only-talks-when-you’re-in-trouble kind of way. He’s a Dad who delights in His kids. He’s the one who sees the parts of you others miss, the quiet hopes, the old wounds, and the dreams you’re scared to say out loud. And He loves every bit of you.
I remember one day just crying out to Him, “I want to know You for real.” And He met me there. Not with lightning bolts or booming voices. Just peace. A deep, heart-soaking peace that said, I’ve been here all along.
So, here’s the deal, friend: God isn’t an abstract idea or a list of rules. He’s real. He’s knowable. And He wants to be known.
That’s why I wrote this, because I’ve seen too many people, especially God's children, live their whole lives thinking God is cold or distant. And I’ve also seen what happens when they realize He’s the most loving, wise, faithful person they’ll ever meet.
And you know what? Once you see His character, His goodness, His mercy, and His kindness, you can’t unsee it.
You begin to walk lighter. Trust deeper. Hope more boldly. Because you know the One holding your life is not just powerful… He’s good.
So, if you’re still figuring Him out, that’s okay. Just start somewhere. Talk to Him like you would a friend. Ask Him what He’s like. Open your heart and your Bible. He’ll meet you. I promise.
And hey, if you ever need someone to chat with about it, I’m right here. Because nothing excites me more than helping people know the Father I’ve come to love so deeply.
Take care of your heart today. He’s watching over it with more love than you can ever imagine.
