How To Stay Calm When Your Toddler Pushes Your Buttons

You know that moment — your toddler is screaming, whining, or testing every rule you’ve ever set — and boom 💥, you feel it: your chest tightens, your jaw clenches, and that little voice in your head goes, “I can’t handle this!” 😫

This is normal.

It happens.

But here's the thing: Your toddler isn’t trying to make you lose it, and if you do, you won't be doing either one of you any favors.

They’re trying to figure out how the world works, and the behavior just happens to be driving you nuts.

Here’s the good news: Every time you feel that little beast inside you rising, it’s an opportunity for you to practice managing your own emotions 🌱

Because when you manage your emotions, you’re teaching your toddler how to regulate their emotions by staying calm in your own big feelings. 🧠

Try this today — the Pause–Breathe–Remember method:

  • 1️⃣ Pause — notice your feelings. Are you starting to feel out of control? Awareness happens in this pause. 🛑
  • 2️⃣ Breathe — take a slow, deep breath. Reset your body and mind. (Add in touching something cold for a grounding reinforcement)🌬️
  • 3️⃣ Remember — remind yourself: "I don't have to act on this feeling. If I stay calm, I stay clear, and then I can respond with intention to this moment". 💭

Say these reminders out loud if you have to.

These three small steps can give you those precious few moments needed to shift your perspective so you can respond instead of react — and every time you practice, you’re building calmer, more confident habits. 🌿

And here's a little something special just for you, to help remember the lesson:
