When you're in the thick of toddler life, it can feel like your brain is continually juggling flaming swords.🔥
🤹♀️ Between meltdowns, snacks, messes, and a million tiny details, it's easy to forget what it feels like to just be with your own thoughts.
You've barely got time to think, let alone contemplate life's deeper meanings.
But there is a doable habit perfect for toddler moms that can be helpful and grounding - even in small doses.
It's a form of journaling.📝
Let me introduce you to Morning Pages—a proven life-changing practice - and one I believe every toddler mom can benefit from. 🙌
Initially developed by Julia Cameron in The Artist's Way, morning pages are simple: you write three pages about anything by hand, ideally first thing in the morning.
- 🚫No structure.
- 🚫No pressure.
🧾Just three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing to clear your head and get grounded.
😳Now stay with me here:
I’m not suggesting you have the time to do three pages every morning!
I've worked with toddlers, remember (and I do have my own child, and I do remember what it was like when she was little).
But what if we paired that down to something more like three lines or 3 minutes of writing every morning?
Would you try it then?📓
Because taking just a few minutes in the morning to write a few lines can still make a difference, and here's why:
What Morning Pages Can Do For You
Morning pages have been linked to many benefits, and many women swear by them!
✍️Journaling—Especially In The Morning—Can:
- Improve focus and mental clarity throughout the day💡
- Reduce anxiety and overwhelm by giving your thoughts a place to go 😌
- Help process and release emotions so you don't lose it later when you're stressed🌊
- Increase creativity and problem-solving🎨🧠
- Strengthen your ideas about who you are and your purpose in life💪
- Boost your mood and energy☀️
And tell me, what Toddler Mom couldn’t use more of that!
⏳Research shows that even a few minutes of expressive writing daily can:
- Reduce stress
- Improve sleep
- Support overall emotional regulation
And if there's one thing I know, it's that all of those things are exactly what toddler moms need more of.💖
And there are even more benefits!
🔁A Routine To Anchor Your Day
Just like toddlers thrive with routine, so do adults.
Journaling each morning can become your first anchor habit — something small but powerful that grounds your day in calm purpose and intention.
Think of it as your own version of the routines that benefit your toddler so much:
- A rhythm that brings safety, structure, and space to your day.🧘♀️
- A few minutes of calm reflection before the chaos begins.🤗
⏰How to Fit In Journaling as a Toddler Mom
You don’t need a completely silent house (dare to dream!) or a whole hour.
If you can get up early enough to get those things, great!
That’s amazing!
But for most moms, that’s a fantasy, an unattainable dream.
For the rest of us non-unicorns, here are some realistic ways to carve out a few extra minutes for journaling:
- Wake up 10 minutes before your toddler
- If you hear them calmly playing in their crib or bed, let them stay in bed for a few minutes longer while you write (even 5 to 10 minutes can give you time to write a few lines with your coffee☕️)
- Journal while your toddler watches their morning shows📺
- Voice journal into your phone while making breakfast, then transcribe later (maybe at nap time). 📱✍
- If you do daycare drop-off, sit in your car for five quiet minutes before heading to work, or close your office door for the first five minutes of your day. (I used to have a daycare parent who would sit in my driveway for 20 minutes to do business calls in their car after drop-off; it was no big deal.)🚗🖊️
- Journal during nap time instead of scrolling or cleaning (not technically "morning" pages, but so what? It's still quiet self-reflection). 😴
- Make it a bedtime wind-down if the mornings feel impossible.🌙🛏️
❤️Why This Matters For Toddler Moms Especially
You're in a phase of life that's amazing but all-consuming.
Your time, energy, and emotions are being pulled in every direction, and 5 minutes of morning journaling is a tiny way to be sure you give some of that energy back to yourself.
Morning pages can give you:
- A quiet way to claim some personal space before the noise of the day begins🌬️
- A way to reflect on parenting wins and struggles🧠
- A place to vent your frustrations privately and safely🤯
- A place to get more clarity about your parenting goals and daily to-dos✅
- A way to reconnect with who you are beyond motherhood🌸
Even a few lines a day can help you feel more present, more grounded, and intentional as a parent.
🌿Self-Care Doesn't Have to Be A Big Deal
Journaling is one of the simplest, cheapest, and most effective forms of self-care you can practice.
📌It doesn’t require a babysitter, a gym membership, or a spa day.
It just takes:
- ✒A pen
- 🧾A paper
- ⏳Five minutes
So, give yourself those five minutes.
You deserve them. 🥰
And don't think you're being selfish - your toddler will benefit too - because a calmer, clear-headed mom is a gift to any child.
🛤️Need a place to start?
Are you feeling unsure about what to write or how to get started?
😳If you’re worried that journaling will just be one more thing you’ll “get wrong”, you’re not alone.
It can be hard to start something new.
But I don’t want you to put this off or give up before you even get going, because you don’t know where to start or need a bit more structure to ease into it.
So...
✨ I'm going to help you get started!
