It's true that the music industry is changing. While leaving behind more traditional institutions such as record label, industry has approached a more do-it-yourself attitude with artist and producers alike becoming less one-dimensional and starting to move like whole businesses. No longer are our fates dictated by men in suits who know very little about music and only view us as numbers.
We see this transition happening more and more nowadays but rarely do we see it done with such style and grace as Minnesota's own JMcDouble. From making fire beats to discovering and cultivating fire artists, Mcdouble has been making a name for himself I the last couple of years. His most notable work has been with up and coming rap artist Onek (one-k) whom he not only produces for but also manages. He is also a founder, A&R and producer of the rap collective Dxstrkt.
I recently got the chance to sit down with young McDouble and pick his brain in order to see what goes into the mind of someone with such talent and ambition. Here are parts of our conversation:
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into music production?
Music has always been a huge part of my life and I always wanted to create it, but I just kind of thought you had to be like a genius or naturally talented to make it so I never really had thought to really try it. I went to Vans Warped Tour one year with some friends and saw some incredible performances and knew I had to be a part of it somehow. On the way home I stopped at Guitar Center, bought a midi keyboard with a DAW and never looked back.
What software or hardware do you prefer to use?
FL Studio (Duh)
What trends do you see emerging in the music production industry?
AI is here but we’ve mostly seen its use with memes. I think AI will be used widespread as a tool for lyrical ideas, chord and drum patterns, and for mixing. I think technology will develop where remoting into session will be a lot easier and smoother allowing for easier real time collaboration.
What inspires your music?
I'm inspired by the music I’ve grown up with and the new sounds and styles I come across. It’s like a never-ending conversation between the past and the present that I get to be a part of.
What advice would you give to aspiring producers just starting out?
Get better each day - learn or attempt something new each day.
