Unveiling the Mystery: A Deep Dive into the Sounds of HaLf

Who the fuck is HaLf?

At first glance the answer is simple. HaLf is a new, 22 year old artist from Detroit Michigan, crafting a unique sound and building a devoted fanbase. But then, upon further inspection you find out that none of the aforementioned information is anywhere on the internet. I had to haggle him for months over numerous Discord calls just to get that out of him.

The sparse information provided throughout his many socials suggests a desire to let the music speak for itself, blurring genre lines and defying easy categorization. Honestly, that's probably what he would want us to believe but my personal theory is that HaLf just might be an already established musician exploring a fresh sonic direction under a new name?

I mean, how else does one comfortably believe that such complex soundscapes can be sculpted by an amateur? It just doesn't feel possible that someone with so little experience would posses the ability to evoke senses of euphoria, melancholy, and everything in between in a two to three minute window. Or maybe that's why?!?!?

Maybe it is the lack of knowledge of conventional rules, patterns and structures that allows such a freedom to create such works of art. Or maybe I'm high and talking out my ass. Who knows? Anyway, I sat down and asked the mystery man a couple of questions. Here are his answers:

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into music production?:

since I can remember I been tryna figure out how sounds are capable of portraying how I feel since I struggle to do it any other meaningful ways.

What are your favorite sound design techniques?

I do a lot of sample work, even in my sound design, cuz theres always a piece of music out there lending itself to my ideas without me knowing, so I try to implement and rework as much as I can. Id say 90% of my workflow is sample work LMAO

Who are your biggest musical influences?:

this won’t make any sense but Jon bellion, hobo Johnson, Elton John, etc.

What are your long-term goals as a music producer?

To create amazing and beautiful things that I can be proud of on my deathbed.

What advice would you give to aspiring producers just starting out?

Focus on what you want to accomplish nothing more, nothing less. I see too many people out here wasting time or worrying about what the new wave is, but being you and accomplishing what you want to is all art is ever gonna be there for. So do that.

How do you think technology will continue to shape the future of music production?

Thats just a small slice of the pie. Technology is paramount in the shaping of humanities future, and the way we change music and art will just be a byproduct of the implementation of more technology into society.

What do you believe is the most important quality for a successful music producer?

To be true to yourself and what you want to accomplish in music. Trying to be someone your not will always be caught by other producers and artists who are just being true to themselves and what they want to create. Represent yourself with your art, not some ideas you want to be like.
